Tigers and Baltimore have some good outfielders. They both need pitching. Could be a match there. Or see if then could sign Tyler O’Neil for 15 mill a year?
Not a huge O’Neill fan, at least for us. Played in Boston which is really favorable to right handed hitters and his platoon splits concern me: an insane 215 wRC+ vs LHP, but only 91 wRC+ against RHP. He’s had issues staying healthy too. Conforto or Kepler might be better options for us.
I'd still lean to adding Siani, with open spots on the 40 man. Several borderline players if space is needed for future moves. Maybe BC should try to move a couple that might fill a need for another team.
I hope they make more than a ripple on the trade market. They should try to get a potential impact bat with their young pitching depth. I lean more to a longer controlled position player than a 1 or 2 year stop gap. For example if they trade for a first basemen, I'd go after Soderstrom, short stop Mauricio or Acuna (Lawler if available).
I think it will take a measure of risk on the younger unproven players for extended success compared to a more certain shorter window for established players. The pirates just don't have the prospects in the upper levels on the hitting side. Siani has at least put himself into a position to be a 4th outfielder, if his new swing can lead to a decent on base average with a touch of pop he could be more even if it's the large side of a platoon.
I have said since this time last year that this was the off-season for more serious moves either by trade or the FA market or both. Hope my gut was not lying to me. We shall see over the next month or two.
Yep, they need to be aggressive early in my opinion, they don't have the money to play in the deep end, so they need to move early to secure a spot in the shallow end or they'll wait until the pool is closed.
Push it signings like Tellez don't count, the pool is real talent and it looks to me their best bet is the trade market to get deeper talent.
They will at least be more competitive for a couple of mid range type guys this off season as opposed to last. Last year’s rotatation at the beginning of the off season had Keller, the promise of Skenes at some point and not much else. The now are headlined by Skenes, Jones, Keller, and solid guys following and in the minors ready. A bigger selling point to a free agent now. Trades should come from the pitching depth. Ben should be able to be more aggressive because the pitching depth is deeper for trades and he won’t get a quick no like last year because no one knew if the pitching would be ready yet. Well everyone knows it is ready now.
Any truth to the rumor that the Pirates are interested in Anthony Santander, switchhitter with the Orioles last year who hit 44 HR, 32 against RHP's. The experts are thinking he will sign for something around 4 years, $80 mil, so about $20 mil per year. A RF/LF - so an OF of Reynolds, Cruz, Santander. Unload BDLC and IKF for that matter, and that 1st year becomes around $10 mil. He's 30 and also makes decent contact 58 Walks/129 K in 595 AB.
I think that a signing like Conforto is about the best they could do in free agency. If there is a bigger move than this, it will have to be via trade, and it will be expensive (which is OK with me if they acquire the right guy),
Sanrtander or Filiponi? Lol! Filiponi is a blowhard on 93.7 the Fan. One of the afternoon guys. Cares much more about sports betting than the actual sports 5hemselves.
I hope there’s truth to those rumors. I love Santander. The thought of him crushing bombs over the Clemente Wall from the left side of the plate is heart warming. As with Tyler O’Neill though, not sure I see them going that hard in FA.
This is a repeat of my post yesterday at a high level so feel free to stop reading!! I think they should protect Siana. In past years I felt more of a roster crunch but this year to me it is worth the gamble that he truly has found something. And if he hasn't shown that by June, he can be an easy candidate to take off the 40 if the space is needed. When both Cabbage and Gray were claimed I put them in the release and hope they clear waivers and get them in AAA bucket, the type of transaction you see all winter so there are 2 spots IMO. I also see Bae, Palacios, and Williams as easily replaced with waiver wire pickups just like the above 2. I would add (maybe put at the front of the line) DeLa Cruz but I just don't see them doing that this early in the off season.
I highly doubt anyone is going to take an OFer who has never played above A-ball as a rule 5 pick, and even if they do, the probability of him making it through the entire season on the 26-man roster is approaching 0. There is little risk here in leaving him off the 40-man.
Agree on Siani and pretty much everything you wrote. Cabbage kinda intrigues me. It’s not like they are swimming in guys with raw power so I wouldn’t mind if they used a roster spot keeping him around.
There are so many players left unprotected on other teams I would much rather than players on the Pirates current 40 man.
Get Dom Hamel and Miguel Ullola and lose Gray and Cabbage. I'll even take Andrew Magno over Joey Wentz.
I haven't really looked into the position players yet but a lot of quality pitchers left unprotected and available.
Mike Vasil, Griff McGarry are two others. And also Taylor Dollard and Coleman Crow, who both can be kept on the DL until healthy.
Nobody added.
whole bunch of nobodies are already there

Siani seems to have unlocked something in his swing to improve contact. I can see him as a 4th OF one day.
I prefer they trade from pitching depth to bring in an impact bat or two. Maybe they can do both?
I agree also. I can count 9=10 starters that we have. Not counting our AA guys

I'd highly highly highly highly highly doubt it.
He has a QO attached, so I don't see it happening
Michael Conforto does not have a qualifying offer and will be cheaper than Santander.
I like the idea of conforto but imo he can't be the big move if we are trying to make the leap. A solid second addition though

Is this a bmc special, or did you hear the rumor from a less reputable source?
Andrew Filiponi.
So then a less reputable source it is...
I was joking in case it wasn’t obvious. But yes, most of the yahoos on the Fan are less than reputable.
Laughed out loud for real at this!
That makes 2 of us if for no other reason he has no idea who Anthony Santander is.
never heard of the guy
Sanrtander or Filiponi? Lol! Filiponi is a blowhard on 93.7 the Fan. One of the afternoon guys. Cares much more about sports betting than the actual sports 5hemselves.

especially for such relatively little upside.
now watch somebody do it, lol.

Siani, and I agree he should be protected.
