Is BABIP a stats worth exploring more into, in your opinion. My first thought is there is going to be a correlation between it and strike out percentage. also between it and doubles. just guessing though.
The statcast-based expected stats have been a game-changer for me on the BABIP front since they consider the actual batted balls. Sometimes dudes are really smoking it and higher BABIP is deserved!
We don't really get that data publicly, at least not easily, for minor league dudes so really only the massive outliers catch my eye.
And at samples these small, it's mostly just noise for me.
The one thing I've seen definitely *can* correlate with BABIP is extreme high home run, low contact guys. When a substantial part of your contact ends up over the fence it can lead to structurally low BABIPs since that kind of contact isn't considered "in play".
Bond's ended his career with a .285 BABIP. In 2002, Bond's had a .370 BA and a .330 BABIP, both were career bests. His career BA ended below .300. Despite his home run totals, he had many seasons when his BABIP was low. As far as I know, there has been no study that explains this anomaly: Superior hitters with low BABIPs.
There are 200 players with career BABIPs that range from .390 to .329. Some were short-timers but some were HOFers. It appears to be a skill.
Crucial series starts tonight against the hapless Rockies. If we lose the series, and even if we don't, BC has to get Nicky G up. I'm almost in the camp to release Michael A. too and call up Bae. But BC will not eat and write-off the contract in early May.
You wanna release MAT and his defensively driven positive WAR while keeping Cutch, Davis and Tellez on the roster?
Triolo needs some AAA time so that's a straight swap for NGon. I'd send Davis down for Grandal as much as it pains me to say it. Suwinski needs to play through this however awful it is to watch and the Cruz situation is horrible, but he deserves a bit more time at SS despite the fact we all know how it will end (1st base for me).
The two main culprits in my book are Cutch and Tellez who both have zero value outside of hitting. If things don't heat up this weekend, I'd like to see BC go nuclear on Monday with a Tellez DFA (would he get claimed?) , Haines fired and Cutch to the IL whether he's injured or not.
"defensively driven positive WAR"......you must not have noticed we can't score any runs. Doesn't matter how good your defensive WAR is. We have to add some bats.
Seriously, there's no way to go with this clown show except to tear it down, at least on the position side. When Bumbling Ben took over, he inherited two major-league-quality regulars. After five years he has . . . two major league quality regulars. It's impossible to exaggerate what a miserable job he's done. Although "MAT is our best option" is a pretty good indicator.
That's what I meant by BC going nuclear on Monday. If the hitters don't perform this weekend against the Rockies pitching staff then the shizzle must hit the fan. Send Cutch to the IL and DFA Telllez. Promote NGon and Bae.
I posted a very similar comment two weeks ago but Cutch got a stay with Shelton promoting him to leadoff and it paid off in the short term.
Funny how nobody ever wants to send Suwinski to the minors. If we go by fWAR, he's easily the worst player on the team. He also ranks 454th out of 467 players in MLB. I think there's a good chance that the pitchers have simply figured the guy out and the "real" Jack isn't the one who pumps up his numbers with a hot streak a couple times a year. Instead, it might be the guy who completely tanks for a month or two at a time.
There've certainly been examples of guys who came to the majors and hit well for a few years, then fell off a cliff long before they reached 30. Nate McLouth, Chris Duncan and Marcus Giles spring to mind. I wouldn't assume that Jack is a lock to turn things around.
I could make an argument that Peguero's at bats aren't too far behind, if at all. The games I have seen, he does a nice job of situational hitting moving the runners. He leads the Pirates system with 21 RBI's and still hitting .317
It's really too bad the Pirates don't have any room on their active roster for any of these guys. Has there been a Cherington sighting? What excuse is he using for letting this fiasco in Pittsburgh continue?
This gives me anothe opportunity to throw in my monthly comment. Baseball needs to expand the rosters for hitters. Let's face it, teams will never reduce from their 13, but offenses were better when there were 15 or 16 hitters on the roster.....Not 13.
Yes, and that would align with leagues in every other team sport where the roster includes more than double the number of starting positions. The owners will never go for it though.
DUMP TELLEZ! Today. Bring up Lamb. Eat the staggering money lost with Tellez. Fire Cherington - his twenty year plan is failing.
Bae's running one of those comical early-season lines; 20% BB, 30% K, .607(!!!) BABIP.

I might dive into it more when there is a home project I don't feel like doing. Bae's babip is nuts right now.
That I find the most interesting stat of the day.

But the players who should be hitting are NOT. Replace them before the ones who help pitching.
Better idea: Replace them all.

Yes he's been awful and I'd have no problem at all with him being sent down for Bae or even CSN. But he does have a history of sporadic success.
And WTF is Josh Palacios still doing on the 40-man? Lol.
32% K rate for Bae at AAA is not great
Unless it’s all called third strikes. That’s what we like!
can we give Seth Beer MLB at bats in May?
Too late. National Beer Day was April 7th.
I would happily celebrate monthly
Monthly?? Weekly and could consider daily here! Beerfest 365!!!!

"Nick Gonzales, Ji-Hwan Bae hitting leaders in month of April for Pirates"
One small problem with this headline....neither wore a Pirates uniform in April, although one or both probably should have. Perhaps in May.
