Pirates fall to 1-5, David Bednar optioned, lower-level players to watch in 2025

Busy day features a Thomas Harrington debut, David Bednar optioned to minors, and lower level minor league players to watch in 2025

The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped to 1-5 on the season after getting shut out by the Tampa Bay Rays 7-0. Thomas Harrington made his major league debut, but it was one that he’ll likely be ready to move on quickly from.

He allowed six earned runs on seven hits and four walks while striking just two over four innings pitched. The four walks are the most he has issued in a single game throughout his pro career.

The offense struggled to figure out Shane Baz, a former Pirates first-round pick, who struck out 10 batters over six shutout innings.

Paul Skenes will pitch in the series finale, the last of the road trip before the Pirates head back to Pittsburgh for their home opener.

David Bednar was optioned on Tuesday to make room for Harrington. After a horrible 2024 season, Bednar couldn’t find any success in the three games he pitched this season. Even in the save he picked up, he allowed a two-run home run. He has a 27.00 ERA in three games this season.

Jason Delay was also designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster for Harrington.
