In our latest podcast episode, we discuss how the roster is coming together for opening day. How confident do we feel about what the initial 26-man roster is looking for the Pittsburgh Pirates?
We also give our ‘soft’ predictions for how many wins they will finish with and who the most valuable player might be.
Shifting to the minor league side, we go over some projected upper-level prospects we are monitoring this season. The projected Triple-A rotation is an obvious pick, but what other players should you be watching going into 2025?
The Pittsburgh Pirates dropped their final spring training game of the year by a score of 5-1 to the Minnesota Twins. Thomas Harrington allowed four of the five runs on five hits, striking out two over three innings pitched.
He left and entered multiple times, giving him more opportunities to get up and get going for a new inning.
David Bednar allowed the other run, a home run, in his only inning of work. He also struck out a batter while throwing 14 pitches.
It was a disappointing end to the spring, especially for the Pirates offense. They picked up six hits while scoring just once. Two of the six hits came from Bryan Reynolds, who also drove in their only run of the game.
He was also the only Pirate to record an extra-base hit.
Pittsburgh will now have Tuesday and Wednesday off to make their final roster decisions before starting the regular season on the road against the Miami Marlins.
We do know it will be Paul Skenes on the mound on opening day, and now we found out who will round out the rotation. After it seemed like Thomas Harrington had a shot at breaking camp, it appears that Carmen Mlodzinski will start the season as the fifth starter with Jared Jones set to start the year on the injured list (still no update).
After the game, the Pirates reassigned Thomas Harrington, Carson Fulmer, Burch Smith, Tanner Rainey, and DJ Stewart to major league camp.
