Just had to bring up Stephenson didn't you? I hated that trade. But pitching coach matters. In one day Kyle Snider suggests a grip change on his slider allowing him to throw it harder.....and the same day he was throwing it super effectively. The Rays are just ecstatic
with the success he had. Became almost unhittable! Put this in the Glasnow, Cole, Morton silo.
Glad to hear Nicholas grades out so well, because he certainly passes the eye test. I figure he either him or Jones is going to be Bednar’s heir apparent in a year or two.
Furthermore the surprise, "Wow, he actually looks good". Watching him in minors, he was generally another case of when he's around the plate, he's good. Unfortunately he was rarely around the plate.
Maybe the BP is an area of strength they could trade from. Holderman, for example, has a lot of value. Holderman + some of the 2B/SS graduated prospect surplus gets you something back.
They always put actual trades up after they've occurred and they're typically very close to even on their model. Enough so that I'm convinced it's the best resource we have.
Get that sentiment but bullpen arms are about the only thing Cherington has had a knack for acquiring and developing so far. A Bednar or Holderman trade doesn't leave us with a bad bullpen but we still only have 2 SP in the rotation, we're short a starting OF and we need a 1B.
while Holderman certainly has a reputation and has done some great things like that immaculate inning, he also has experienced mental farts and dainty injuries
despite that, his hype is still high so it wouldnt be the worst idea to sell high on him
I wouldn't be against it. I personally don't want him in the 8th inning role, and would prefer he became the new Jared Hughes. GB specialist when you need a double play

Uuuuuugh. That is hard to read, man.
I think I get the article but the numbers just don't mean anything to me.
My Understanding+ has a staggering +42 WTF, which is probably lowest on this message board, which has a SABER RATING off the charts.
He is a free agent. The Pirates could try to resign him, but I think both he and the Rays want to stay together.
https://blogs.fangraphs.com/lest-we-forget-frankie-montas/ this had me a bit warmer on Montas as an option.
we’ve found our reclamation project

Safe bet the FO is looking at this data, or similar, hence the surprise callup for Stratton.

Apparently around midseason this year Bob finally sprung for a GPS.

Gotta disagree.
If BC wants to compete next year, makes more sense to trade from prospect depth than MLB depth.
I’d be much more comfortable dealing away someone like Barco or Harrington plus Nick G/Peggy/Bae than Holderman plus one of those guys.
Barco and Harrington don't have much value at all. About a third of Holderman's value.
Your source for your claim?

Best one we have based on prospect rankings and past trades as a data model.

Ok thanks.
I’m not convinced this is a definitive source for player value. However I am convinced Holderman has more trade value than Barco and Harrington.

yes Holderman has an immediate replacement in MLod
Why not keep all these guys and have a good, deep bullpen?

I have more trust in MLod than Holderman
