I've been drafting Wily Peralta's player page, which means going through his career year by year to do a summary. And . . . uh . . . no. I don't want to see this guy in Pgh., especially not as a starter. If this is the best BC can do for a rotation, he needs to find a more appropriate level to do his team building. Maybe father and son games. In Sri Lanka.
Most excited to see Skenes get a taste against some ML hitters, obviously. Other than that, I really wanna see what Gutierrez can do. He's performed well since acquired, has a bit of an opening now with Endy down & as AM noted, catchers will get the most runway in the spring just because of need. Some of the other, more exciting prospects will be lucky to get into more than a handful of innings.
The Pirates are now down to 19 hitters and up to 21 pitchers on the 40 man roster. This direction teams have gone over the last several years to load up on one inning pitchers and reserves that play multiple positions may make sense statistically, but is not bringing new fans to the games.
I was talking baseball in general, which I do care if it is entertaining. Guys like Jorge Soler (who hit 36 homers last year) are drawing less attention by teams than a .240 hitter like Adam Frazier, or some reliever that no one has ever heard of. I know teams do it because like you said teams want to win.
Just replying to your example, with full knowledge of the point you are making....the Marlins need offense, probably as bad if not more than the Pirates and yet they haven’t tried to sign him. Now, if asked if I want him on this team, sure. If we didn’t have Cutch, Davis, Tellez on the roster fighting for DH at bats.
I guess the days of 16 hitters and 9 pitchers on a roster are over. I should probably quit complaining about the trickle down effect of teams having 13 pitchers on a roster. :)
Tellez may do well, but it seemed odd how early we signed him.
Well they chose Palacios over CSN. They had similar starts in mlb over their first two seasons although Palacios was older than CSN is now. Palacios had almost double the at bats and an OPS around .500.
This pretty much ends the JT trade at a major loss, unless Ro rediscovers his velocity and command.
Generally I’d agree with this, and the quality over quantity comment too! But Ro was a solid piece and was ranked in the top 100 shortly after acquiring him. His value probably wouldn’t have gotten higher than that by waiting a half or full season? It just sucks what happened with Ro, and that they didn’t shoot higher for the second piece. Ezequiel Duran would look nice now. 😎
Yes, and my point is that we should have had expectations of a good return because they chose to trade Taillon for that return when he was still two years from free agency.
Those guys don’t chew up your return capital either. You can take 1 or two of those guys and still get a decent return. Yajure and CSN on the other hand.....
Depending on the player, you may not have much choice though. Look at JT: good when healthy, which he was for about a total of 10 minutes in 5 years in Pgh.
The quantity over quality approach only works if you give those players a chance to develop at the big league level. Some of our trades that we might have bought into when they happened, look senseless right now.
Oddly enough, Ro was more quality than we should have expected from that trade, given Taillon’s status. Perhaps if they had taken quality for the second piece, instead of the grab bag of CSN, Escotto and Yajure they’d have had better luck.
Right, it’s revisionist to say “oh they took quantity over quality” with JT. They got both! Both arms were 50’s on FG, CSN was intriguing, and Escotto was the lottery ticket. It didn’t really work out, but it be that way, sometimes.
I think there’s a solid argument to make that you don’t do both, that you just do quality. But, that doesn’t change the fact that at the time of the trade they got prospects that were valued at least what Taillon was, and more than likely exceeded his minimal value. As you said, sometimes it just doesn’t work out.
CSN had no business being in the majors to start the season last year. He finished the season on fire hitting close to .400 for over a month. I was hoping he would get a chance this year. With the exception of Suwinski, the Pirates seem to take the safe route with guys like Oliveras and Alika as opposed to the unknowns like Andujar and CSN. (Palacios earned his spot.)
I didn't mean to put Palacios under the bus, just to highlight that his 1st 2 seasons he had around 40 at bats each year. He also finished each of those years at 26 and 27 respectfully. CSN will finish this year at 25 and finally started showing power which this team sorely lacks.
I think Palacios has earned another shot this season with his late game performances.
This is a dfa that could come back to really hurt if CSN figures it out on his next team.
I'm not overly upset over it, just seems this organization doesn't have a plan or any faith in their on development of players. I hope CSN goes on to have a good career, kid was put in a position to fail by this organization.
Unlike most, I still like Ben. I tried buying into their plan, but these last few months has been pretty tough. It seems like Ben is tied up somewhere while the analytics team are making all of the decisions.
It is more frustrating to me because I traveled almost 200 miles and stayed in Indy a few times in 2023 seeing about a dozed games. To me, it looked like CSN might have figured it out in August and September. Andujar dominated and hit around .300 in his 48 at bats in the majors. I would have prefered they were still on the 40 man over pitcher 20 and pitcher 21.
Pitchers who are back end of the bullpen types on even the best teams are a lot easier to replace than a guy like CSN. So are defense first SS’s too for that matter.
This organization is, hands down, the most incompetent and poorly led organization in baseball. They do things without any rhyme, reason, or purpose... just pushing stupid buttons, based on who knows what sort of whimsy? You trade for Oliveras and DFA CSN? Joshua Palacios... really? A 29-year-old rookie with a .692 OPS is a guy they just have to have on the 40-man... irreplaceable with some random AAAA part picked up off waivers? Absolutely the stupidest move I have ever seen from this organization.. and that is saying something.
The hyperbole reading this type of stuff makes me roll my eyes. As poorly run as the Bucs are, I’d take them over a bunch of other rudderless organizations like Colorado, KC, Oakland, Chicago, etc. Take a breath, AB.
I'd like to see that attitude in the middle of the Steeler's defense. Liked the last second hands up "WTF" before swinging. Wondered if the pitcher even tried to answer him. Hope he goes to the Mariners so I can follow him there.
Also, just some jagoff on the internet, but i feel like solo developing a changeup shouldn't be too difficult given his action and armslot that should give it natural run? Maybe conviction/confidence in it is what is holding him back right now
Problem is separation from his fastball. His fastball velo drops as his pitch count increases to the point where they're effectively the same pitch.
When he was getting the Statcast treatment in Bradenton his pitch mix would show a majority of changeups not because that's what he was attempting to throw but that his fastball and change were indistinguishable.
I swear every Pirate starter of the last decade gets told they just need to throw the changeup with conviction or whatever except that every single one of them kind of sucked. Suck harder ain't gonna do it, you gotta figure out a grip that actually works.
This is the real "Uncle Ray and MOAR SINKERZ!!!!" issue. Keep thinking if they just throw it like they mean it, it'll be good! Meanwhile the pitcher that may have the best changeup (Carlos Jimenez), is almost at a point where I'm not sure we can even give him 20 grade control.
I think with the change-up, it's more of a commitment to throw it more. He has it, and uses it, just want to see the commitment to continually use it. Almost same thing for Jared Jones and commiting to use the rest of his pitches. It's there, just want to see more.
I've been drafting Wily Peralta's player page, which means going through his career year by year to do a summary. And . . . uh . . . no. I kind of believe the conspiracy theory that they contacted the wrong W. Peralta lol
They even have sub-replacement interns.
So BC is keeping Alika around......can't wait to see Alcantara shine when they are both in ST games.
Which should force Ben's hand.
I'm predicting, Santana will be signed as soon as we can move players to the 60 IL.

I really wanted to see CSN beat out Palacios, it rips my heart out that we'll never get to experience this kind of attitude on the roster.

That guy was built for the Burgh'.

I don’t care if it’s entertaining, as long as they win. I’d prefer both, but I’ll gladly take the latter over the former if forced to choose.
I was talking baseball in general, which I do care if it is entertaining. Tellez may do well, but it seemed odd how early we signed him.
Ah ok, gotcha. It’s been a tipping point with analytics for sure. What works and what wins isn’t always pleasing to the eye.
It also makes me worried about how they intend to score runs. Awful lot of reliance on Cruz and a couple others.
You don't have to score many runs to lose (competitively!) 3-2 day after day, which seems to be the goal.
Well they chose Palacios over CSN. They had similar starts in mlb over their first two seasons although Palacios was older than CSN is now. Palacios had almost double the at bats and an OPS around .500.
This pretty much ends the JT trade at a major loss, unless Ro rediscovers his velocity and command.
after two tommy johns and only one productive season, i am unclear why anyone expected anything out of a Taillon return
Because we traded him when we didn't need to? I.e., why trade him when we did if we didn't like the return?
Generally I’d agree with this, and the quality over quantity comment too! But Ro was a solid piece and was ranked in the top 100 shortly after acquiring him. His value probably wouldn’t have gotten higher than that by waiting a half or full season? It just sucks what happened with Ro, and that they didn’t shoot higher for the second piece. It was considered good at the time, prospect break your heart I think is the saying.
And hindsight is 20/20 on that. But we can agree to disagree.
the best aproach is to ask for lottery ticket teenagers like Oneil Cruz, Johnny Severino and Estuar Suero
Escotta could have worked out
but this of course is contingent upon a reasonable development program
Those guys don’t chew up your return capital either. You can take 1 or two of those guys and still get a decent return. Yajure and CSN on the other hand.....

would have been damaged goods for damaged goods any other way
i guess Andujar instead of what we got was on the table so be all that ends well

Maybe. But how many guys has this group kvetched about DFA-ing that don’t hurt? Dust in the wind, man.

The pattern with CSN was, when he should have been called up he wasn't, and when he shouldn't he was.
They love adversity (failure)!
The organization is good at putting players in a position to fail.

sorry to see Canaan go - - will probably be a padre before the day is out
Smith-Njigba on waivers for the Chapman signing. I hope he clears waivers but I would not count on it.
Pirates just signed Wily Peralta to a minor league deal. Thought he'd get a major league deal but won't complain!
I just checked out his numbers. Even though he has kind of been in a 9 year slump, it would be cool to see him equal his 2014 17 win total.
And I have some waterfront land to sell you.
I'm also in a 9 year slump but that's just my life 😂
Is BnP or AM the bigger sean sullivan fan?
Also, just some jagoff on the internet, but i feel like solo developing a changeup shouldn't be too difficult given his action and armslot that should give it natural run? Maybe conviction/confidence in it is what is holding him back right now
Was Sean Sullivan in The Town? He should have been, if he wasn’t.
He was one of the flower shop workers.

20 grade control does seem generious at this point for Jimenez lol
The curse of Luis Escobar!
To my eye at least, best changeup of the Huntington or Cherington Era...and 30-grade command lolol
Oh and me > BnP when it comes to Sullivan lol
Don't. You. Dare.
I said what I said lol
That's it. For one night only, live on Pay Per View, a BoD Squad boxing match. But instead of actual boxing, it'll be rock em sock em robots.
My money is on the ref, or the round sign person....
And the winner gets to take on . . . you know . . . .
You two can be the headliner for the russell martin vs martin maldonado match we never got
