Here's something I found interesting while researching the year 1991.

21 Apr Pittsburgh Pirates Epic Baseball Comeback: In a historic baseball game, the Pittsburgh Pirates staged an extraordinary comeback against the Chicago Cubs. Trailing 7-2 in the bottom of the 9th inning and facing a 5-run deficit, the Pirates scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to secure an unbelievable victory.

I might have dimly remembered that.

Derek Shelton interviewed on MLB - he really does sound like he knows what he is talking about.

I have seen him several times in the past as well. Always like you say. A shame that he rarely has had a full roster to do what he probably would want to do.

The Pirates appear to have signed a MiL OF named Imanol Vargas and assigned him to Altoona. He’s a power hitter who strikes out a whole lot. He’s also 26, so . . . .

Maybe the should take Bob Seymour in the rule 5.

I want them to take Carlos Duran.

.... coming out of the Dodgers system, 526 PA, .821 OPS, 29 doubles, 22 HR, 90 RBI. He did strikeout 174 times, but walked 76 times (2.3 to 1 K/BB rate). Maybe about 30 AB at ST to see?

Oddly, a year ago Matt Eddy at BA included him in a list of five interesting MiL FA hitters. Said he might be worth a shot in the majors. Instead, he ended up in indy ball briefly before getting a MiL deal with the Angels. He spent all this year in low A, in the super high-offense Cal League.

Oy.

I saw Dombkowski pitch a game in Toon Town last season that really looked good. I'm'a say based on that one game, he is a guy who could put it all together.

And... fellas and fellaettes.... I know we're talking southpaws here, but I must remind about Emmanuel Chapman. If'n ya needs to replace a Chapman, well, pardner, we already got one and I loved what I saw of him.

Chapman more on my radar after watching some games on him the other week.

Chapman and about 3 others likeWoods, Perachi, and Dombkowski can all get some innings in ST, but Joey Wentz really did well under the tutelage of the Pirates after being DFA'd by the Tigers. He had a 5.37 ERA in 38 games, 55 IP for Detroit, 60 hits, 27 BB/60 SO. For the Pirates in 8 games, 12 IP, he posted a 1.50 ERA, with 6 BB/13 SO, and giving up only 6 hits. Loved the ERA with the Pirates, and the better than a strikeout per inning pitched for both teams - he's a keeper. Start the season with Wentz, and keep a close eye on what happens at AAA with Woods, Chapman, Perachi, and Dombkowski. Would it be out of the question to give a few relief appearances at the MLB level to Hunter Barco?

I don't think it'd be out of the question, but ideally it's at the end of the season when he's closer to any sort of innings limit he may be on. Let him get his work in as a starter first and then shift him over at the end.

Agree. I see him as eventually part of the Rotation, but this could be a good way to help the team and get him some exposure to the speed of MLB in 2025. Could Solometo also be a possibility?
