Does this mean they’re out on Sasaki?

I don't think they had any chance. Clearly he isn't worrying about the money for his Japanese team, otherwise he would have waited two years and made himself and them more money. He's going for a specific team I'm sure, one that won the World Series most recently. Pirates should be calling the Dodgers to see what they will give up for bonus space

I wasn’t serious. But because they’re not, I agree with your last sentence.

Do we know where this player ranks among those eligible for this signing period? Clearly this was described as good news but given the signing pools and Pirates share, I am hoping they can get a top 4 or 5 player even though they are miles and obstacles from ever contributing.

I couldn't find a lot on him other than he seems to be the prize pupil at his academy and he was ranked highly as a Mets potential signing. There's a problem rating prospects on the international side that could possibly be at work here. He's been connected to the Mets so long that he probably hasn't been in front of scouts much recently. Attached players tend to disappear off of the radar, which is why you don't see many change teams late in the process.

It's an awfully tough thing to figure out because information is erratic and quickly outdated. I think the few people who cover the LAm scene start getting reports on kids when they're 14 or even earlier, but at 16 a kid might be in a very different place developmentally than at 14. Current Pirate Edward Florentino could be an example.

Also, teams don't exactly like to put a lot of information out there. They used to go to great lengths to hide promising kids until they were old enough to sign. Some practices have been disallowed, but who knows what goes on.

I found a top 50 listing at MLB.com that didn't include Perez. I also found an "eight guys to know" (or maybe it was 12) at BA that didn't list Perez but did list Yohan De Los Santos, Yordany's younger brother, who's expected to sign with the Pirates.

The Twitter link above has some batting video. I've seen short clips of him in the outfield and he looks smooth out there, but I'm sure they wouldn't post bad clips.

The news here is that you don't see too many players flip teams this late. I know of a few the Pirates lost over the years somewhat late (Escotto was one) and they flipped Blanco Jr very late

A little more than 2 months away and anything can happen between now and then, but it would be a helluva entry by Max Kwan if it comes to pass!

Changing twice this late would be new to me. For what's it worth, I saw a picture of him today in a Pirates uniform. They can also bring him to their academy for a time, cutting into possible late changes
