Forget 2 years of Cease for Skenes, Termarr, Bubba + and sign Trevor Bauer for 3 years, $35M and keep all the prospects.

A decent Christmas gift would be Michael Lorenzin. Always liked this dude, and I would allow him to bat as a PH too. I mean there's no comp between his bat and Alika's or Delay's bat. If BC allows him to hit, Lorenzin would sign here for less $$, which should get BC and Bob's attention.

I like the Lorenzen idea. Affordable even for the Pirates. And your idea might keep Alika on the roster if you could DH for him every 5 days.

Robert and cease blockbuster would solve all kinds of problems and maybe we can convince them that nicky sticks is still a premier first round talent

That would be an awesome Christmas gift. The price would be steep, but this division is wide open for the next couple of years. Why not go for it now.

What the ChiSox were asking from Cincy on just Cease, I don't think we can afford the prospect capital. They posted it earlier on mlbtr.

It would solve several problems but potentially cause some.

What were they asking for?

Expand full comment

At least 3 top 100 prospects with 2 being pitchers and and a third quality pitcher to boot. So like WTM said Skenes, Termarr and Bubba with Harrington thrown in for good measure.

I'd rather trade Keller and Bednar say to Texas for Langford, Walcot, Porter, Leiter and Rocker than trade 4 of our top prospects for Cease.

Supposedly Sox want four top 100 prospects. If they stick to that, the Pirates aren’t getting Cease without giving up Skenes, Termarr and Bubba, probably more.

Expand full comment

Cincy ain’t getting that for Cease. He’s good, but that’s a prime Chris Sale package and Cease isn’t at that level.

Expand full comment

Yeah no thanks

I was thinking the Pirates could keep all 3 of those guys, if they were willing to give up Jared Jones, Solometo, Jebb and a lesser prospect.

Expand full comment

Doubt that’d come anywhere close to getting them Cease.

I think it is more realistic and closer to than what they were asking from the Reds. They were asking for a #41, #57, #68 and Reds 6th prospect. If the Reds are turning that down. If the Sox are going to really trade him, they will most likely have to settle for less. He was 7-9 and a 4.58 ERA. They might be better off waiting until the all-star break.

Cease would be nice but he's a pipe dream. I'd rather just roll with Skenes, Termarr and Bubba.

The Pirates aren’t giving up 20-25 0-6 years, especially not all those cheapo 0-3 years, for a couple expensive arb2 and arb3 years. Doesn’t matter whether it makes baseball sense. It’s strictly a financial calculation for them. Always.

Expand full comment

Nor should they give up all that for 2 arb. years. There are 3 or 4 comparable pitchers available as free agents right now. Why would anyone give anything close to that up for Cease until there are no comparable arms left in free agency.

I agree

also Austin Meadows in right field looks like an interesting experiment to platoon with Oliveras

Mackey’s comments at the time of the McCutchen signing that another deal was imminent, and Cherington seeming to second it, were surprising.

A) the Pirates front-office is notoriously tight-lipped when it comes to this stuff.

B) there haven’t been any serious trade rumors I’ve read where the Pirates were mentioned as suitors. I guess that could be due to A, but if there’s really a fire burning, I’d expect some smoke.

C) Nothing since has come out about it (unless the deal in place was the Jake Lamb signing, which…no).

So, any speculation? Anyone have any guesses as to what this could be? I wouldn’t mind acquiring a legit SP in trade, not necessarily Cease or Burnes where we have to give up the farm, but something.

I don't expect them to be willing to meet the price to get a top arm. My expectation is there is a guy out there that can be had for 2 or 3 40-man players and they will go that route. I can't imagine they want be in this cycle of perpetually DFA guys for cash considerations.

I heard there was an offer on the table for Manaea.

I will be all on board with Mananea.

Still buying the line that Davis is going to catch I see. Cherington’s comments regarding Davis were: “he’s coming into spring training as a catcher and we’re going to give him every opportunity to prove he can play the position.” Wishy-washy even for him. If I was a betting man, and I’m really not, I’d wager that Delay and Sanchez will do by far the majority of the catching next year.

Pretty much my wish list as well.

1) I don't care who they get, just a solid 3 or better. Maybe even Bauer?

2) Just get it done. At least 4 years with a 5th year option.

3) I still want Jorge Barrosa, he shouldn't cost much in a trade and he might get on base at a good clip with very good defense in center.

Expand full comment

I’m surprised there aren’t any Bauer rumors since he pitched over seas and got some innings back on his arm.

Jake Mayers for Holderman straight up!

Expand full comment

I like Mayers but he is more of a short side platoon guy. For a defensive first centerfielder I'd want a big side platoon guy for Holderman. Barrosa wouldn't cost Holderman and if he did we should get another good piece back. Barrosa is a switch hitter with fairly even splits. He has more power batting from the left side but he is no power hitter.

Arizona is probably going to want someone not on the 40-man roster for Barrosa. Someone like Yordanny de los Santos might be enough to get the deal done.

Bae is gonna shock us all, especially me since I’m not a fan and becomes what the grandson of the wind is supposed to be.

I wouldn't mind him starting in Indy, focusing on CF, his approach at the plate and how to best utilize his speed on the base paths.

I rather have Suwinski In LF since he’s the better fielder and Reynolds in RF since he has the better arm.

I'll take Center Fielders for a $100 Alex or on a one or two year deal

Kevin Kiermaier (34, 3.2)

Michael A. Taylor (33, 3.2)

Harrison Bader (30, 2.5)

1. We signed the inning fillers. If we don’t sign a difference making SP look for one in our young guns. 2. Yes to Keller but I don’t see him in Reynolds money. K’ $ maybe. 3. I’d like to see how Suwinski’s D is after a year of experience.
