Looking at the 40, if anyone is added to the roster the next cuts are likely coming from the “hitting” side, with Delay, Bae and Peguero the most likely names.
I doubt they would DFA delay since he has options and is a good defender. I would say Peguero is on thin ice…he’s looked terrible in spring training and was bad in AAA last season. Probably a good chance he clears waivers
I guess I look at Peggy's age and the fact that in 2023 he seemed to show real promise (not super star but maybe a starter) and I just don't think after a bad 2024 they would just give up on him. Seems like the type they see how he responds this year. I do think he would be claimed at a minimum. I am not saying that team would necessarily keep him on the 40 man forever, but I think there would be many teams either wanting him on the 40 all year or hoping they are the team that adds him and they can sneak him through waivers later on and have him in their organization.
He was an excellent prospect in 2023 and now a mystery - what happened in 2024 and is still continuing? If he could turn it around, he would be valuable to the Pirates later this year
I'd add Palacios as he is out of options and the fact that Jack has shown a pulse at the plate (extreme small sample size) leads me to think if either makes the opening day roster it would be Jack. I just don't see much of a path for Palacios and at this point does this fall under 'being fair to a veteran' and letting him try to hook on elsewhere or atleast he can gauge where he stands league wide.
Among the others Bae to me is the obvious. Catchers with options can seem like a luxury until they are not and my gut (no inside info) feels they aren't ready to give up on Peggy as I truly think he would be claimed quickly.
Jack has been VG so far and we need to not forget his 26 HR in 2023. Defensively he has played a lot of CF and RF, so fits well to give Cruz or Reynolds a blow, and/or pitch in as a LH DH. With the fact that we need what Jack provided in 2023 and he is still very cost effective, he gets the nod over Palacios.
Not sure if it is physical or mental with Peguero. At the time he was called up in 2023 (Cruz injury) he was having a very good year in the minors. He started at AA and was .786 OPS in almost 300 AB with 20 doubles, 11 HR, 32 BB/58 K - Excellent numbers for a 22 year old. He was promoted to AAA, hit .889 OPS in 27 AB with a triple and 2 HR, 3 BB/3 K and immediately promoted to MLB. The K's skyrocketed, but he was still able to hit for a .650 OPS with 4 doubles, 1 triple, and 7 HR in 198 AB, fielded better than anyone at 2B (33 G) and very well at SS (39 G).
From there to this presently it's like a completely different player. When sent back to AAA last year he just did not respond, and so far in ST it's just more of the same. We lost this kid somewhere, or he lost himself - fact is he will be grabbed up by another team if the Pirates DFA him.

How about Valdez?
I think Valdez might have passed up Bae and Peguero.
Me too and a lefty hitting infielder is mare valuable.

Yep, Delay should only be removed via a trade, he wouldn't get a big return but has a valuable skill set considering his options.
I think he a major league back-up catcher for at least some teams.
I’m thinking he would too, currently he doesn’t have the bat nor the glove to be a backup SS.

Did you notice how big his bottom half has gotten ?
That isn’t going to age well at all.
I was really rooting for him coming up through the ranks but I’m just not seeing it anymore
If he was a gal he'd make the rockin world go round.
Freddy, is that you?

Jean Segura was his body comp, they were not wrong.

I think Stewart added and palacios DFA’d.
LF Pham
RF Reynolds
CF Cruz
C Bart
2B Gonzales
DH Cutch
1B Stewart
3B Hayes
SS IKF
UT Triolo
UT Frazier
OF Suwinkski
C Davis
I think you could see Yorke over Suwinski depending on how the rest of the spring goes and maybe hall over Stewart if that’s how it plays out.
Stewart ability to play a viable 1b might be the deciding factor.
100% agree!

Peguero going to another organization might be what’s best for both him and the club?
Look at the numbers - we had a very strong 22 year old prospect and now we have somebody we cannot figure out.
Forgot Palacios, but good points!
Bae seems like the obvious candidate to me. He’s officially reached Cole Tucker Territory.
