Holmes should have thrown to 3rd on the comebacker before Fry. Had an easy out. Instead he couldn't risk throwing a ball in the dirt with runner on third and gives Fry a meatball to win the game. It's the mental decisions that win and lose games.
But isn’t the runner still on third with two outs after Holmes throws to first? It’s a more risky play to throw for third to get that out. I don’t think not throwing to third to get the out is a mental failure. The way relievers were hanging pitches, Holmes could have just as easily hung that pitch at any point.
I’ll repeat what a Baseball Prospectus writer said on a podcast at the start of the playoffs, baseball is more fun when relievers are getting hit. Pure chaos.
The runner was on 2nd when Clay got a sharp one-hopper right back to him. Runner was caught in no-mans land trying to advance to third, so yeah it would have been an easy out.
Jazz was going to the bag, he was ready but Holmes looked at the runner and mistakenly went to first. You just don't want the winning run on 3rd......it certainly can effect what pitches he throws to Fry.
It’s still two outs and a guy on third if he takes the out at first though. If there were no outs and the runner at second broke, I’d agree with you…go after the lead runner then. If Holmes throws wild to third, then the story is why he’s going for that out when the play at first gives you two outs. If a player is scared to throw pitches because he’s worried about bouncing one, he shouldn’t be out there.
Think of it this way. If there’s a runner on second with one out and the batter bunted, would you want whoever fields the ball to throw for third?
In bottom of the 10th with winning run, it was a better decision to throw to 3rd imo. Throw wild to 3rd?? I mean maybe in high school. Holmes had plenty of time. Changes the way you can pitch to Fry, with a runner on 1B only.
Have you seen how many pitchers make throwing errors in the bigs? Happens more often than you’d think. If you hose up that throw and you end up with runners on the corners, then you have to bring the infield in (which is never good).

Wow. That was a dramatic few innings.
No ghost runner in extras! I like it.
OMG.....Guardians staving off defeat.
I still want an offseason article on Luke Weaver and WTH did he do? Age 31 and
he becomes a multi-inning closer for one of the richest teams in MLB that would be the last team you'd think to take on a project.
I feel bad for Clase, but he couldn't have failed in a bigger way on a bigger stage.
He got worn down. It was almost inevitable
Did he? I thought his workload was pretty much in line with what it has been the last couple of seasons?
I guess in terms of IP, it's been consistent 4 years in a row. Just didn't seem as dominant beginning with the Detroit series.
It’s also surprising that when you look at his numbers, expecting to see cartoonish closer numbers. And instead, he’s kinda like Hunter Stratton.
