FFS, he's caught less then a full game in spring training and I'm seeing the headlines already on pirates.com like "Grandal's impact felt by Bucs pitching staff", lol. Well at least he can hit over the Mendoza Line.

My Marco Gonzales analysis is let's see how healthy he is and how much time it takes him to get back to normal. Last year he was shut down with injuries after after only 55 innings and an ERA over 5. From 2018-2022, he was a solid #3 to #5 starter with ERAs of 4.00, 3.99, 3.10, 3.96 and 4.13. His records during those years were 13-9,16-13, 7-2, 10-6 and 10-15. (I agree, he did not look good today.)

Bailey Falter pulls ahead of Marco in early returns!

If Baily doesn't 'Falter' before the 5th or 6th inning I'm all in, lol.

Falter? Damn near killed her.

Ortiz is gonna be a weapon out of the pen.

Precisely, now when do they commit to making that move?

Once he's out of options and they're pushed into a corner. The Pirate Way lol.

Is that the biggest Pirate flex? Or is it deciding not to move a guy off his primary position till he makes the bigs?

Good to see Flowers velo back up a bit. Was down low 90's and maybe even high 80's in AFL

Stratton and Nicolas showing up as the whiff kings

Expand full comment

Oddly, Stratton’s velo is down. So is Jose Hernandez’.

Expand full comment

Nicolas actually down the most (1.2 MPH). Stratton and Hernandez down only 0.4 MPH. But, Ortiz and Marco up

Expand full comment

Did the wind pick up? Brown made it sound like the wind is fairly strong, and that would seem to take a bit off the velo, wouldn't it? Or is the path from the mound to the plate protected enough that the wind would have no effect?

Not enough distance at 60'6" for wind to really take much effect when a guy is hucking it 90+.

Expand full comment

Right, not much of an effect. But there was reference to only a .4 mph drop. Certainly the 1.2 would be larger than any wind effect.

I could see it playing a part, but I'd have no idea lol

LECOM obviously isn't as tall as a MLB park, so it very well could create more resistance I'd imagine.

Looks like our minor leaguers are better than theirs.

Or that we're facing pitchers who have no chance of pitching in the majors this year.

True, but I'm thinking the same as Wilbur.

What's the eye test saying about hank behind the plate

Looked like any other C.

That is a good thing I guess. Would have worried had you send he looked jittery back there. Maybe next game he will do his best Yaddie impression and te the plate Ump what to call 😁

Brian Moran still in the game. His brother Colin is not as of today.

Colin should be easy to track down, he can’t move that fast. My three-legged cat is quicker.
