Did Hunter Stratton look as good as his Savant data does? 90-ish cutter with 2800 RPM should play for a reliever, especially with a three-pitch mix that includes a decent four-seamer. Only two contacts against. One was a foul ball and the other was a soft groundout. Can't find any video, but that looks playable.
He must have been injured last year, but in 2022 he was in CF for the Twins for over 600 innings. He did see the majors in 2021, but that was for a cup of coffee at best.
On Fangraphs CF defense using 600 innings as the Qualifier, he was 15th of 26 CF's in 2022 with a +1.7 Def. Michael Taylor was in KC and was 6th of the 26 CF's with a 4.8 Def. The downside is that he has no Options remaining, but if he continues his surge, he will be a much better CF asset than LH hitters Palacios and CSN, who are not CF's.
I would like to see him start 4 or 5 days a week, but play all over the place. The position people have quieted down about with Triolo is first base. There have been at least two throws to first this spring that I think Triolo could have handled where Rowdy did not.
He's as good at 2B as anyone we have. And probably just slightly less than the guy who is playing 3B and was the Gold Glove 3B in the NL last year. He's definitely a building block for this team.
Cruz stole a base yesterday, but I still haven't seen Cruz show close to the speed he once had. I'm not sure how many days a week Cruz should be playing.
I'm fairly sure the Mitch Keller they have now is the kind of pitcher who will probably give you 5 or 6 shutout innings following a bad first and I can live with that.
There is no rhyme or reason the way Shelton handles pitch counts but he has shown reckless decisions in the past concerning pitch counts. I guess Nutting doesn't care about his big investments, lol.
Lol... I was pounding the table for a Keller extension last season. I have no problem with the contract. I'm just joking about hot takes from spring training games.
Triolo has to be the everyday first baseman on this team doesn’t he, at least on days when he’s not playing 2nd or 3rd? The guy’s a defensive savant in the infield and sure seems to be showing he can hit.
I know to a lot of people think it'd be "wasting" his abilities or he "doesn't have enough power", but if you're gonna run Peggy at 2B, it feels Tree at 1B is the way to go.
He’s wasting his abilities by sitting on the bench. Obviously 3rd is taken and Suwinski’s going to play CF most of the time. The Pirates have multiple decent choices for 2nd but first base remains a huge hole both offensively and defensively and Triolo’s a terrific corner infielder. That’s where he’d be the most valuable to this team at least until they get someone else who’s worthy of playing the position. What would he be wasting at first, his arm? There’s a great advantage to having someone at first who can make a turn and throw to second or home and he has power when he elevates the ball like he did last inning. Of course we do have Tellez and Joe to play first and wouldn’t want to waste either of them. 🤪
Peguero should be given a CF's glove and taught to run routes. He's made some good plays ranging far out to get balls on the grass so I think he could do it. Has the sprint speed. Hits LHP. Could platoon with Jack and get 2 starts a week at 2B or something.
Right. Was so relieved to hear Brown say some Brewer fans told him Tellez was “better than you think” or even “better than he looks.” Wow, guess I misjudged the guy but on the other hand he wouldn’t need to do much to be better than I think.
Brownie seems to come up with those uncorroborated types of stories to fit his narrative on that particular subject. Since the Brewers play in the Cactus League I guess I need to believe that some random Brewer fans who live in Bradenton came watch Tellez play, lol. Personally, after having watched Tellez the past few seasons tells me WHYSIWIG.
That would qualify as hard core Brewer fans, lol. I wasn't familiar with Salena Zito so I looked her up and this quote I felt was pretty interesting. "In my estimation, there is no patch of geography in this country that is the “middle of nowhere.” This is America; everywhere is the middle of somewhere."
Wehner said the first thing he thought when he saw Joe in center was “another option to relieve Suwinski.” The first thing I thought was “the Pirates desperately need some decent outfielders.”
I wasn’t sure if I was going to do the threads for ST, just because it didn’t seem like many of the games were going to be streamed. But I’m glad I did. Glad you guys choose to come here to BS lol
Having Savant data for Sean Sullivan but not Paul Skenes is a hate crime against numerate people.

Celestino making his case for the reserve outfield spot? Especially if Palacios is hurt and CSN continues to underwhelm this spring.
I liked that signing--player not that old who has had success in the minors and is a good defender. He might be the platoon partner we need for Jack.
He must have been injured last year, but in 2022 he was in CF for the Twins for over 600 innings. He did see the majors in 2021, but that was for a cup of coffee at best.

Forgot to mention he leads the team in AB 13, Hits 7, is tied for 1st with Hayes with 6 RBI, and has a 1.307 OPS. Hard to do better!
Watching defensive highlights from Triolo. Not even his normal position. Guy is just a ball player. Get, like, five more like that.
“There ain’t much to being a ball player. If you’re a ball player.” -Honus-
According to Fangraphs, he played a little CF in the minors.
He's a ballplayer alright, and no higher compliment than that exists in this game! A winner!
Guys like he and Ke'Bryan Hayes are MONEY
Brought to you by the FO who couldn't draft.
Tellez scored from second on a single? Was the RF off getting a beer? Or did Delay hit it out but had to hold at first waiting for Tellez to score?
That was Bae who subbed for him. MLB didn't change it.
Let this be Hayes from now on!
Came back just to read this.
Triolo making his case for the 2nd base job.
I would like to see him start 4 or 5 days a week, but play all over the place. The position people have quieted down about with Triolo is first base. There have been at least two throws to first this spring that I think Triolo could have handled where Rowdy did not.
I'd have no problem with that. He's earning a daily spot, even if it's all over the infield.
He's as good at 2B as anyone we have. And probably just slightly less than the guy who is playing 3B and was the Gold Glove 3B in the NL last year. He's definitely a building block for this team.
Curtis Mead reminding everyone that he’s a DH.
Twice in one inning.
Is Joe the weakside platoon in CF?!?!?!?
Michael A is still out there, sign him.
Triolo with a blast!!!
And the glove……still waiting for him to play SS.
Cruz stole a base yesterday, but I still haven't seen Cruz show close to the speed he once had. I'm not sure how many days a week Cruz should be playing.
First time I saw him play, back in the NYPL, they had him at short. Looked like . . . a shortstop.
Liover with the walk!
B-Rey ready for a big year. He's hurting the ball
IIRC, somebody on MLB made that same type of statement about him - might have been on the 30 clubs segment for the Pirates
It was Brian Kenney.
It's over. Keller Sucks! The Pirates are sunk with that contract. End it all NOW!
I'm fairly sure the Mitch Keller they have now is the kind of pitcher who will probably give you 5 or 6 shutout innings following a bad first and I can live with that.
They let Keller throw 48 pitches today, but only 10 for Skenes yesterday.
I think "End it all NOW!" was a dead give away, lol.
Maybe we can trade him to the Rays in-between innings and he can regain some confidence by pitching against us.
Do they have an almost washed up SP that used to be a star that we can trade Keller, Chandler and Termarr for?
EASY there soldier.
Rowdy better hit 40 bombs this year
Have you seen his fWAR from the year he hit 32? 40 bombs is barely enough to offset his terrible defense and non-existent running.
He's literally a futile player to have on the roster
Welcome to Pittsburgh, where 1B is a permanent black hole. They peaked with Kevin Young, and that's just that.
Triolo has to be the everyday first baseman on this team doesn’t he, at least on days when he’s not playing 2nd or 3rd? The guy’s a defensive savant in the infield and sure seems to be showing he can hit.
Whoops. I just posted this without scrolling down far enough to read your post.
I know to a lot of people think it'd be "wasting" his abilities or he "doesn't have enough power", but if you're gonna run Peggy at 2B, it feels Tree at 1B is the way to go.
Ya mean they ain't starting Termarr at 2nd. Those bass terds.
If Termarr sees Pittsburgh before June 2025, I might have heart attack.
He’s wasting his abilities by sitting on the bench. Obviously 3rd is taken and Suwinski’s going to play CF most of the time. Even if he’s the ‘utility guy’ doesn’t mean he’s sitting on the bench.
3 games at 2B
1 at 1B
1 at 3B
Maybe even two at first if there’s a lot of lefties that week.
He’s still going to play nearly everyday, just doesn’t need to have a define singular position.
Now if Tellez doesn’t play well and Peggy catches fire, then you adjust.
But going into the season, he’s going to have to at least be free to move to third once or twice a week to give Key a day off.
Maybe CF? Didn't he get some time there in AAA? Branigan reminds me of Triolo as well.
Tree did get time out there at one point. Brannigan might be next if he hits. He's got the wheels and arm.
Would it be improper to run Jase Bowen out to CF in a few of these games?
Right. Was so relieved to hear Brown say some Brewer fans told him Tellez was “better than you think” or even “better than he looks.” Wow, guess I misjudged the guy but on the other hand he wouldn’t need to do much to be better than I think.

He's the Selena Zito of baseball commenters.
Just happened to overhear conversation at a local diner joint between two hard-up Brewers fans pining for the good ole days of Rowdy Tellez.

Well... if he could only pull his weight... I shouldn't say that being a fat old man myself.
lived experience! ;)
Has me ready to ask what Chavis is up to lol
No worries. If/when they put Joe over there, Tellez won’t look so bad by comparison.
Connor Joe in , rechecking CF????
Had to do the double look when I was updating this with the lineup lol
Wehner said the first thing he thought when he saw Joe in center was “another option to relieve Suwinski.” The first thing I thought was “the Pirates desperately need some decent outfielders.”
The public demands it...
Signed BC and DS
Any idea on who's following Keller on the bump?
I'll update right now with what's been released
Nvm. It was already updated.
SEAN SULLIVAN!!!!!!
Want to see if there are less nerves this time around. Or if the velo drops a bit in favor of his control coming back
More velo!!!
You all are having more fun in this setting than is proper.
But I do understand throwing things and making loud utterations DAMMIITTT!!!!!
Pretty stoked for what these ST game threads mean for when they start to count. Really enjoyable to read and BS with all of you.
I am here to yell about Shelton sucking!
I'm here to yell loud noises
VROOOM
Now you're getting it!
I wasn’t sure if I was going to do the threads for ST, just because it didn’t seem like many of the games were going to be streamed. But I’m glad I did. Glad you guys choose to come here to BS lol
That’s what we’re here for — BS! 😄
As Pirates' fans, we know almost nothing but BS.
It's all we have, yep. Have had decades of losing and bad front offices present one included so we have to take what we can get.
