There’s a good piece on several of the draft picks at Dejan’s site. Most interesting part is on Hartle, who had the big sophomore season then tanked as a junior. Says he tried to change his delivery to get more velocity and messed himself up. That ought to be correctable.
I just wanted to say thank you for all the Draft reporting your team has provided. I personally don't follow these players until they are drafted, so I'm thankful for reports like these that have illuminated who these players are. It also helps me understand why they were picked in the first place. So thanks for the effort!
With a 4.1% k rate and great contact ability, how did Camden Janik not get taken before the 12th round? I know nothing about the kid, but his profile reads like a 5th - 8th rounder to me.
It’s kind of nice to see the club finally be internally producing (and, yes, still finding a few in the FA ‘project’ bin) some quality pitching depth. This feels like some strange alternate universe. 🙂
In many (most?) recent iterations of the Pirates, this year’s version of German would have been pitching ‘not all that well’ at PNC, as soon as he got his pitch count stretched out, just for lack of healthy MLB(ish) caliber arms.
Teams can do some damage in the UDFA market this year. Padres signed Cooper Weiss. No doubt SS with power/speed combo. Reminds me of Tommy Troy/Matt Shaw. An older prospect though.
Baltimore signed a Prep pitcher that is up to mid 90s.
Boston got a decent pitcher in Calvin Bickerstaff. So did Houston with Danny Trehey. Bryce Eblin is a good signing by the CWS.
So is Zander Sechrist by Minnesota. SP mix with plus control. Obviously was one of Tennessee heroes in the CWS. Some Andrew Abbott traits.
Texas signed Theo Hardy(Charles McAddo teammate at SJS). Switch-hitting, big bodied SS. Better hitter from the Left side but nice power/speed combo and good fielder at SS. Can probably slide over to 3rd too cause he pitched a little as a Freshman in college so the arm is at least plus.
I had Janik and Curley on my “wish” lists. There was just so much talent available that would sign for the 150K or slightly above. And If you don’t have an extra 50K-60K to give a player 200K on Day 3(which 205.80K is top 250, 8th round money), then you are doing something wrong.
An extra 50-60K to give to 3-4 Day 3 picks(180-240K total) is nothing and could easily be gained with one Senior Sign in round 10.
If they gave their 10th round pick 20K then you basically got the money(163.80K you would save((183,800-20,000))).
And that’s not even dipping into the overage or any other savings with earlier picks.
He’s committed to Arizona. UDFA market you spend up to 150K w/out counting against your bonus pool. Only teams that don’t have cheap owners do well..lol.
And Arizona isn’t Western Kentucky. I bet the NIL money and his chance to up his stock is plenty enough for him not to take a UDFA deal.
Unless a team has extra bonus pool money, wants to pay up and have the extra money they would probably need to pay him count against their pool(and choose him over some Prep to spend the money on) I don’t see him signing.
Cooper Weiss was a really good get for SD. He was one of the first to get a deal.
Hunter Hodges and Zander Sechrist we’re also good gets. I had Calvin Bickerstaff and Danny Trehey and Bryce Eblin on my Day 3 list as well. Buckerstaff is a control artist with a SP profile.
I was thinking even $200,000 type bonus might get him. Being from France, just getting in pro ball seems like his main goal.
He definitely can up his stock but it could also crater if he doesn't get playing time or he underperformed next year.
They have Mason White and Maddox Mi.... not even going to try and spell his last name. White should have 2nd or SS while Maddox has 3rd locked down. Really don't know who else they are bringing in though. They sure like infielders with M in their names lol.
No, you are right. The International imports definitely want to get that professional contract.
It was a reason I thought he would be a good get for team and probably an easier sign.
And I like the “clay”. Smooth actions at SS, plus arm(can probably move to 3rd if need be), switch-hitter with a good hit tool and budding power. I’m a fan!!
I kind of want to see him as Arizona though being a College Baseball fan.
I was pissed about Burkholder. I really wanted to see him at WVU. Fucking Philly’s ruin everything!!
The 3rd day of the draft would be my favorite if I were a scout. Trying to foresee a kid's potential with a possible MLB ceiling. All for $150k which would give you job security with Bob and BC if you can identify that player. It happens every year......a low-rounder becomes an All Star!
Taking a stab in the dark, I would watch Curley from VCU, now transferring to the SEC.

Playing in the Big 10, more doubles power than homerun power. Not sure, really wasn't on my radar. Looks like a solid pick.
When do the Ethan Holliday sweepstakes start? (Ducks).
When the draft lottery takes place. ChiSox and A's already out, neither can pick higher than 10.
OT, but Domingo German opted out of his deal with the Pirates. He wasn't pitching all that well in AAA.
He resigned today :-X
I saw right after that they said they were open to him returning. I guess he wasn't drawing much interest.

Ortiz and Priester have probably saved us from some less-than-optimal veterans. Ortiz has started only 3 times but he's fifth on the team in IP.
Fingers crossed with Ortiz. Would be so awesome to see him have continued success as a starter.

BA has an NDFA tracker here:

They do this every year. It hasn't been very reliable, but it's something.
Day 1 - A-
Day 2 - B+
Day 3. F

Your assignment is to track every one of these players. Let’s see where they go!
They should try to grab Tellier, Burkes, and Hinderleider as UDFA's. Make a run at Jackson Linn too.
Did anyone take Meurant? He would good UDFA target.
He’s committed to Arizona. UDFA market you spend up to 150K w/out counting against your bonus pool. Only teams that don’t have cheap owners do well..lol.

I did too on Burkholder. I think he has a lot of similarities to Griffin minus the arm.
Good list but you forgot Cal McGinnis from Evansville lol.
Showed up in big games (only time I saw him play) had over .900 ops on the year with a good batting average.
I don’t know why I can’t like posts. I tried liking your replies but for some reason I can’t.
Trying liking mine. See if it works.
No problem, thanks
I obviously figured it out. I have to like them in the “activity” section.
It’s weird that you can reply normally but not like normally.
