Overview
The Pirates drafted Fay as a senior out of Alabama. He was mostly a reliever prior to his last year, then made 18 starts with a 4.54 ERA, 2.1 BB/9 and 10.5 K/9. He throws his fastball 91-93 mph according to MLB Pipeline and 92-95 according to Baseball America. The pitch has good movement and deception, and he throws it from a wide angle that is tough on right-handed hitters. His out pitch is a slider that he throws against hitters on both sides of the plate. He also has a cutter and change that aren’t well regarded. Fay has good control but may have trouble with left-handed hitters as a pro. Pipeline ranked him 229th in the draft pool, BA 140th. Like all of the Pirates’ draftees in the earlier rounds, he’s a high-floor, low-ceiling pick. Fay signed for $61,000 under the slot amount.
