Overview
In Cervantes and first rounder Seth Hernandez, the Pirates selected two of the most highly regarded prep pitchers in the 2025 draft. Baseball America ranked Cervantes 51st in the draft, FanGraphs had him 30th and MLB Pipeline 49th. He throws four quality pitches with very good command for a prep pitcher. His fastball sits at 90-93 and reaches the mid-90s, with good movement. His best pitch is a change, which he disguises well. He also is able to locate both pitches. Cervantes throws a curve and slider that aren’t quite as good as the other two pitches, but both have very high spin rates. At 17 on draft day, he’s young for the class. He’s committed to UCLA. The slot value for the pick is $1.93M.
