Overview
Bidois was a fairly prominent signing out of Australia. He’s very athletic and could add velocity as he fills out. When signed, he threw 88-93 mph, with a slider and change. He reportedly reached 99 in extended spring training in 2023. During that season, his fastball generally sat at 94-96 mph. He mostly went heavily with the fastball, but he also threw a very high-spin curve, as well as a slider and cutter that both show potential. His command is very much a work in progress, which isn’t surprising given all the missed time. So far, he misses a great many bats, but some observers find it puzzling because they don’t think his stuff is quite that good.
2020-22
Bidois’ career took a while to get going. His first year turned out to be the pandemic season. He finally saw action in 2021 in the FCL, but his debut didn’t last long. He pitched six innings over three starts, then went on the injured list for the rest of the season. He had Tommy John surgery and missed all of 2022.
2023-24
Bidois finally saw significant action in 2023. The Pirates assigned him to Bradenton at the beginning of June and, other than one brief stay on the injured list, he pitched the rest of the year in relief. By the end of the year he was serving as the closer. Opponents didn’t have much success hitting him, batting only .173, and he fanned 16.7 per nine innings. Control was an issue, as he had a 6.0 BB/9.
In 2024, Bidois moved up to Greensboro, but he missed the last two months of the season except for one outing for Indianapolis on the last day of the AAA season. He continued to get whiffs at a prodigious rate, posting a K/9 of 13.0. He walked 5.0, which was better than the previous year. Hitters had just a 179/294/283 line against him, but his ERA was a less impressive 4.25. Some of that seemed to be bad luck, including a low strand rate; his xFIP was 3.46.
