Overview
The Pirates drafted Alldred in the 24th round in 2018; he was just the second left-handed pitcher they selected. He made great strides on the mound at Cincinnati. As a freshman he barely pitched and was not successful when he did. He saw more time as a sophomore, though he walked a lot of batters. As a junior in 2018, he put things together, posting a 3.95 ERA as a starter, with an 85:29 SO:BB ratio and a .237 BAA in 79.2 innings. Relying heavily on deception, Alldred throws in the upper-80s, and adds a slider and changeup. He signed quickly after the draft.
2018-20
Alldred spent most of his debut season pitching out of the Morgantown bullpen. He put up impressive numbers. Opponents managed only a 200/270/220 line against him, and that’s including two outings at West Virginia at the end of the season, one of which didn’t go well. Greensboro in 2019 was more difficult. Alldred had a good K rate — 9.5 K/9 — but his opponents’ line of 263/346/393 was above the league average of 239/316/362. He didn’t pitch in 2020.
2021-23
Alldred spent most of 2021 pitching out of the Altoona bullpen. He had a good season there. His walk and K rates were decent, and a very low .203 BABIP helped him hold opponents to a .176 average, which in turn helped him to a .253 ERA. The Pirates moved him up to Indianapolis in September and he got into five games there. He managed to give up a lot of baserunners without much damage thanks to a 100% strand rate.
In 2022, Alldred pitched very well at Indianapolis and the Pirates called him up in mid-May. He made one scoreless outing, then was immediately sent back to AAA so Pirate fans could watch Heath Hembree blow up some more games. Two weeks later, the team designated Alldred for assignment to clear roster space and preserve the roster spots of their many, sub-replacement veterans. He cleared waivers and was assigned to Indianapolis. He continued to pitch very well there until September. Through the end of August, he had a 2.39 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. In September he had a 10.54 ERA and 2.20 WHIP, so the month did a number on his season stats. Overall, he was very tough on left-handed hitters (.620 OPS) and just decent against right-handed hitters (.750).
In 2023, Alldred served in a swing role and ended up making 17 starts. His numbers weren’t good overall, including a 5.20 ERA. He was actually much better as a starter, with opponents posting a .704 OPS, compared to .945 when he pitched in relief. Alldred was having a good season until June, but from July on, his ERA was 6.75.
