Overview
Seattle drafted Bins in the 11th round as a college junior and paid him an above-slot bonus. He was athletic in college with good speed, but his build is heavier now. He has a strong arm and receiving skills that are considered potentially good but in need of some work. In the low minors he had trouble with passed balls and errors. That hasn’t been as much of a problem in the upper minors, but his CS% has usually been low. At the plate, Bins has above-average raw power, but he’s had strikeout problems and hasn’t hit for average. The Pirates acquired him in a deadline deal for Tyler Anderson.
2019-21
Bins didn’t have a great debut overall in short season ball, but he did show some power. After the pandemic season, Seattle jumped him up to high A. He had a much stronger season there, hitting for average and power, with a lot of walks. Bins got a mid-season promotion to AA and was traded to the Pirates soon after. He struggled in AA both before and after the trade. He played only twice after mid-August due to a wrist injury.
2022-24
Bins opened the 2022 season back at Altoona, but even though he struggled severely there, batting .130, the Pirates moved him up to Indianapolis in early May when Henry Davis joined the Curve from Greensboro. At Indy, Bins started off hitting about like he did in AA. In June, though, he started putting together a decent-ish season at the plate. That amounted to hitting for moderate power with a passable walk rate, a very low average and an alarming K rate. He hit RHPs a little better than LHPs. Bins didn’t do well with the running game, throwing out just 13% between the two levels.
Bins’ 2023 season was largely lost to a meniscus injury. He started the season on the injured list, then got re-injured a few innings into his first rehab game in May. He ultimately came back in early August and got to Altoona in time to appear in 25 games. He didn’t hit much, but did throw out 30% of base stealers.
In 2024, Bins mostly stayed healthy, missing the last couple weeks of the season. He spent over three-quarters of his time with Altoona and struggled at the plate, batting 193/302/354. He struck out in 35% of his plate appearances. Bins hit better in 15 games with Indianapolis, with a .275 average, but he struck out even more frequently. Defensively, he threw out 21% of base stealers and committed only two passed balls.
