Overview

Finol was a low-profile signing by the Reds out of Venezuela.  He seems to have settled in quickly as a utility infielder.  At second, at least, he’s been a reliable defender.  He hit for average his first two years, which got him to full season ball relatively quickly.  He hasn’t shown any power or speed, though, and struggled when he got to full season ball.  The Pirates acquired him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft. He quickly settled into a organizational utility role, moving to whichever affiliate had a need.

2017-20

In his debut in the DSL, Finol hit for average with some power and very good plate discipline. The Reds moved him up to advanced rookie ball in 2018 and he again hit for average, but fell off in other areas. In 2019, he spent most of his time in low A and struggled to hit. By this time, he was playing all around the infield. Finol didn’t play during the pandemic season and, that fall, the Pirates selected him in the minor league phase of the Rule 5 draft.

2021-23

In 2021, Finol played at four different levels, from rookie ball to AA. In 2022, he split his time between high A and AA. He never got more than 58 ABs at any level and generally hit very little. He apparently caught a couple times in the FCL in 2021. In 2023 he continued to fill in, getting into 42 games for Altoona and one for Greensboro. He hit a little, with a .673 OPS. He played mostly at second and third, but also caught six times.
