Overview
Miami made Scott the 13th pick in the 2018 draft. He’s a tall outfielder who was thought to have five-tool potential. He had enough speed to play center, but scouts thought he’d probably shift to right eventually. He has a plus arm. As a pro, Scott’s offense has been hit-or-miss, more often the latter. The Pirates acquired him in the Jacob Stallings trade.
2018-20
Scott largely struggled during his first two seasons with the Marlins, the first split between the Gulf Coast League and low A, the second mostly at low A, with a late promotion to high A. He didn’t show much power and had trouble with LHPs, putting up just a .582 OPS against them in 2019. He didn’t play in 2020. Baseball America still ranked him highly in the Miami system.
2021
A+: 276/333/436, 395 AB, 25 2B, 6 3B, 10 HR, 31 BB, 92 K, 14-20 SB
Scott had a moderately good season in High-A, with his power starting to show up in games. He finished strongly after tough months in June and July, with an .875 OPS in August and .954 in 13 September games. This time he had a huge reverse platoon split, posting a 1.008 OPS against LHPs and .717 against RHPs. Scott played all three outfield positions, more often right than the others. After the season, Miami traded him to the Pirates in the Jacob Stallings deal.
2022-23
In 2022, Scott went to Altoona but wasn’t able to build on his 2021 season. Instead, he had largely the same season as he’d had in 2019. What production he provided came mostly at the beginning and end of the season. He had a huge month of April and a fairly solid month of September. One encouraging sign was that his power, including six of his seven home runs, came in the season’s second half. In the field, Scott started 32 games in center, 58 in right and 13 in left. In 2023, Scott went back to Altoona and regressed, hitting an anemic 196/263/315. He batted .119 in August, although missing most of July with an injury may have played a role. Still, he didn’t have any good months all year.
