Overview

Hall is a big, left-handed hitting first baseman whose game is about power. He’s put up very good exit velocities, but hasn’t generally hit for average and he strikes out a lot. In 410 AAA games, he has 76 home runs but has struck out 22% of the time. He’s walked 11% of the time. He’s played a little outfield, but is realistically limited to first, where he’s probably a little below average. Hall has hit LHPs well some years in the minors, but not in his brief time in the majors. The Pirates signed him to a minor league deal for 2025.

2016-17

Hall had little trouble with the low minors. After signing, he put up an .890 OPS in short season ball, then in 2017 he hit 272/340/533 in low A with 27 home runs. He added two more in a brief stop in high A, so he finished with 29 longballs and 101 RBIs.

2018-20

In high A in 2018, Hall continued to mash, with a .904 OPS and 11 home runs in 48 games. The Phillies moved him up to AA and, in 80 games, he continued to hit for power, with another 15 homers, but he batted only .224 and struck out in nearly a quarter of his plate appearances. In 2019, he went back to AA for the full season. He hit 38 doubles and 20 home runs, batting 235/344/454 with strikeouts again in about a quarter of his plate appearances. Hall didn’t play in 2020.

2021-23

Hall spent all of 2021 in AAA and the power dropped off. He had 14 home runs and a .741 OPS. The Phillies sent him back to AAA in 2022 and the power returned. At the end of June, the Phillies called him up for close to two months. He went back to AAA in late August and returned for a few games in October. Hall finished with an .858 OPS and 28 home runs in AAA. He hit another nine longballs in the majors and had an .802 OPS there, but he had a 5:44 BB:K ratio there.

In 2023, Hall opened the season in the majors, but he got hurt after a week and missed two and a half months due to thumb surgery. When he returned he hit very well in AAA, with a .941 OPS and 18 home runs in 74 games. The Phillies called him up for several weeks in July and he didn’t hit.

2024

Hall spent all of the 2024 season in AAA and his hitting fell off sharply. He hit 236/320/387. The Phillies outrighted him in August and he became a free agent after the season.
