Overview
Uganda had never had a pro baseball player until the Dodgers signed two players from the country in January 2022. The Pirates made it three by signing Matoma. He has a ways to go, as you’d expect, but the Pirates consider him a legitimate prospect. His fastball gained velocity after he got to the Dominican academy, reaching triple digits. As of 2025, his velocity was 95-98 most of the time. Matoma’s main secondary pitch is a slider that doesn’t have great spin, but so far the Pirates have had him concentrate mostly on throwing the fastball.
2023-24
Matoma didn’t pitch a lot in his debut, but in 16.2 IP, he didn’t give up a run. He allowed 12 hits and seven walks, and struck out 14. In the FCL in 2024, the Pirates continued to keep Matoma’s workload on the light side, 22 innings in 15 relief appearances. He continued to pitch well, posting a 1.09 WHIP and 0.82 ERA, with nine walks and 28 strikeouts.
