Overview

After a string of overdrafts on day two, the Pirates started day three of the 2022 draft with yet another.  Perachi wasn’t among MLB.com’s top 250 draft prospects nor Baseball America’s top 500.  The team also continued a pattern of taking pitchers from obscure schools, in this case Division III Salve Regina U. of the little-known Commonwealth Coast Conference.  After posting a 5.28 ERA in his sophomore year, Perachi dominated in his junior season, going 9-1 in 11 starts with an ERA of 1.00, and an 0.89 WHIP and 15.1 K/9.  He also pitched very well in summer 2022 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League; selecting pitchers who’ve done well in summer ball is another pattern with the Pirates’ front office.  Perachi added some muscle before his junior season and his fastball, when he was drafted, reached 93 mph, with some projection possibly remaining.  In 2023, though, he was only averaging about 90 mph.  He throws a high-spin curve from two different angles and adds a change.

2022-24

As often occurs with the Pirates’ pitching draftees, Perachi didn’t pitch in the season he was drafted. He spent 2023 in the Bradenton rotation, as well as making a few long relief appearances. He pitched well at times, but often was hampered by poor control. Opponents hit 267/366/415 against him, all significantly higher than the league averages.

In 2024, Perachi split the season between Greensboro and Altoona, and got contrasting results. With the Hoppers, he started ten games and relieved in six, putting up a 2.08 ERA and a miniscule 0.86 WHIP. He also had excellent walk and K rates, and despite the homer-prone home ballpark, didn’t allow a longball. Perachi got into a few early-season games for the Curve, then moved up permanently in early August. In AA, he made ten appearances, eight starts, and had a 6.15 ERA. Opponents hit .321 against him and he walked more than twice as many, leading to a 1.88 WHIP.
