Overview

Carmichael is an athletic catcher with good speed for the position and solid all-around offensive ability. Baseball America ranked him 91st in the draft pool, MLB Pipeline 93rd and FanGraphs 112th. A three-year starter, he put up good numbers as a freshman and then hit 366/406/563 as a sophomore. He didn’t show a lot of over-the-fence power until his junior year, when he batted 329/398/613 with 17 home runs. In 2024, Carmichael hit well in the Cape Cod League (299/372/496), which seems to carry a lot of weight with the Pirates’ current front office. According to FG, his bat speed is a little below average, with his power coming to the pull side on pitches middle-in. In college he had decent walk and K rates. Carmichael is agile behind the plate, but his receiving and framing need work. FG describes his arm as “good,” but BA disagrees. He signed for the slot amount.
