Overview
Urbina was an infielder when the Pirates signed him, but he eventually started catching a few games each year as well. Despite a good first year, he ended spending four seasons in the DSL, and that’s not counting the pandemic season.
2019-23
In his 2019 debut, Urbina played mostly at third, catching just once. He hit well, with gap power and good plate discipline. He didn’t play in 2020, then came back in 2021 and had just a decent season, although he made contact consistently. He mostly played third, but he caught seven games.
In 2022, the Pirates sent Urbina back to the DSL for a third season, but he missed nearly all of it due to injury. He got into six games, all at catcher. In 2023, he went back to the DSL for a fourth season and hit well, batting 274/400/436 with 11 walks and 11 strikeouts. He split his time in the field amongst second, third and catcher.
