Tonight Indy is playing Triolo at short and Devanney at 3rd. Solak is 2-2. He is batting .367 with an OPS over 1.000. I am not suggesting in any way that he is a solution, but it’s hard to understand how he can hit .367 at AAA and do nothing in the majors.
2) The Pirates are likely all but certain to trade Bednar at a premium -- a move they should have made two years ago. The fact that they've likely bumbled into still getting good value out of Bednar is a minor miracle. Cherington should be named the patron saint of blind squirrels for that one. Regardless, there is no argument for holding him as an asset at this point. SELL! SELL! SELL!
If they cannot get way more than that, they should not trade him. A premium, healthy closer who is relatively inexpensive and not a rental should get a top 100 prospect + another player like Mueth.
There’s a report on something called MLB Scoops that Birdbrain will be an ex-GM tomorrow. I have no earthly idea what that is, probably some goober in mommy’s basement. But maybe it’s a faint flicker of hope for the hopeless.
Dejan calling for a "top-down enema" lol. I'd like to see Williams either relegated to operations and given a peer POBO or fired too, honestly. Williams, Cherington, Kelly and Nutting all need to go.
Which is impressive because what exactly are they hiding? The complete guide to screwing up repeatedly except for that brief moment when an MVP was at his peak?
Just insecurity all the way up and down the ladder at all stops, imo. I wasn't lying when I said all the Bob Nutting usernames here were already taken when I signed up.
I remember that game like it was yesterday. But the better one was one week before on August 5, 1979 when they trailed the Phillies 8-3 (Steve Carlton) and won 12-8 on a game winning, pinch hit grand slam, in the bottom of the 9th by John Milner off of Tug McGraw. And a great home run call by Milo Hamilton. "Grand slam. Grand slam. The Hammer nails one off of McGraw" Oh, those days were fun.
I do not recall that. It was at home. The Phillies were good. And the Pirates were emerging. I also speculate that if that Steve Carlton faced the Pirates of today, there would be a reasonable chance for a perfect game every time out. Players then were not considered a good hitter when they hit .240.
Thanks for looking it up. Don't recall the second game. Losing to Carlton in the 5th 8-3 ; I only remember the comeback. And the radio call. Wish I could find that somewhere.
Im going to suffer over these next 10 days in hope that I have something to look forward to after the deadline. I’m just so sick of watching this team go through the motions and I’m hoping the youngsters sure to come up breath some life into this team.
Their first series after the trade deadline is at the Rockies. I live in Colorado and may go to see Skenes, but it depends what they do at the deadline.
Funny thing about BRey, is that while he's been the best position player here since 2019, for his first game, there was no fanfare as the buzz was all about Cole Tucker, who was also making his MLB debut.
As much as I hate to say it, I think Reynolds should DH most of the time. Cutch has been solid, and it will be sad to see him go but that DH spot is one that needs to open up so the team can hopefully (not likely) get two productive OF’s
Here's my question though. Do we know Reynolds is going to be a better DH than Cutch next year or even the year after? I totally get your point and I would bet on Reynolds (and oops.. he has a big contract). But if the current version of Reynolds is a look at the future, he will not be a good DH.
If Cutch doesn't finish strong, I think he'll make the decision to hang 'em up. He was having a decent season, enough to merit one more year, until the past 4 weeks. No HRs, 3 RBI, .210 BA.
Also, if Cutch wants to play and Pittsburgh isn't an option, there aren't many teams left that use a true DH. He'd have a hard time shopping his skills. Even the Pirates only employ him because they're do lacking in hitting talent that he happens to be a net plus for them.
Dejan isn't always my favorite but he may be the right editorial voice to cover this team just now.
Bard is a guy a good org will bring in to work in development: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/07/daniel-bard-retirement.html#comments
The Brewers swept the Dodgers on the road and have tied the Cubs for first place in the Central.
Good, make the Cubs over pay for another starter, hopefully one of ours!

Because he's not a major league player.
Let's accentuate the positives.
1) Cherington is all but guaranteed to be gone.
2) The Pirates are likely all but certain to trade Bednar at a premium -- a move they should have made two years ago. The fact that they've likely bumbled into still getting good value out of Bednar is a minor miracle. Cherington should be named the patron saint of blind squirrels for that one. Keller should go as well. Keeping him at this point makes no sense.
For the right return. I mean, for that matter, there's no point trading Bednar for some magic beans, either.
The nice part is that with the added wild card slot, MLB has more buyers these days.
Really depends on the return
I dunno. BTV only has Bednar as worth about something between a Nick Yorke to Zander Mueth type return. Hopefully they're wrong on him.
High leverage relievers almost always get a better return than expected. Cherington making the trade scares me though.
If they cannot get way more than that, they should not trade him. A premium, healthy closer who is relatively inexpensive and not a rental should get a top 100 prospect + another player like Mueth.
Yep
That’s about right. Sometimes pirate fans think their players are worth so much more.
Sure but I'd rather keep him with that sort of return coming back.
There’s a report on something called MLB Scoops that Birdbrain will be an ex-GM tomorrow. I have no earthly idea what that is, probably some goober in mommy’s basement. But maybe it’s a faint flicker of hope for the hopeless.
MLB Scoops is pure click-baiting and engagement farming. 99% of what they “report” turns out to be bullshit.
They also said back in January Ke' Hayes requested a trade.
Mlb scoops is usually full of shit. But here's hoping they're right. Just if he's gone, who's going to handle the trade deadline?
I’m assuming this is sarcasm, but if not, I’m sure the usher could do a better job!
My comment wasn't to say that I wanted cherington to stay to handle things just speculation on who to congratulate or blame when moves were made.
Graves or some other assistant GM who gets the interim title. I’d assume those guys were in on any trade talks already.
The trade deadline without Cherington would be the least of the Pirates’ worries.
Still hard to believe thatr Nutting would finally act now.
"The trade deadline without Cherington"
In what alternate dimension could this possibly be a bad thing?
Things can always be worse.
I generally believe this but not in the case of this current iteration of Pittsburgh Pirates baseball.
Heaney trying to pitch himself out of the burgh.
Dodgers inquiring on Bednar. Send them Bednar and Heaney for 19 yo CF Eduardo Quintero. Or Cruz and Bednar for Zyhir Hope and Quintero.
Yankees had scouts in town for the series. Guessing they’re scouting Hayes & IKF.
Well wishes and adios to both

Lost me at $10 million cash, you would never go for it.
I doubt the Yankees would like to pay 2X on Hayes' salary against the cap either. I'd be paying $10M to get rid of $35M. Easy money.
For the first time in many a moon, I didn’t watch even one pitch of this series.
I might be the only happy Pirates fan on this thread.
I'm Bobby McFerren my man.
This has been a miserable season, but getting swept at home by the second worst team in baseball and out scored 27-7 is a new low.
There is always tomorrow.
It’s only a day away.
Well, they held the mighty Comiskeys to seven runs.
Dejan calling for a "top-down enema" lol. I'd like to see Williams either relegated to operations and given a peer POBO or fired too, honestly. Williams, Cherington, Kelly and Nutting all need to go.
We need to get rid of your ass for sure Bob!
My wife and kids agree.
Those are rich kids. They don't say anything hostile for fear of the trust being used against them.
Sure, they tell my wife, though and she hates my guts too.
have we ever got any confirmation he has control over baseball operations?
No, this org operates at basically CIA level secrecy because they're constantly embarrassed by themselves.
I'd find it entertaining to see which ones you tried. I'm open to a few good anti-Butting jokes while we await Bob's undoubtedly late demise.
All the ones that could be construed to look "real".
I'm not so sure he has control over mlb operations. but I wouldn't be surprised if he does
If you squint hard enough, you can see a competitive team…
Like, with your eyes closed. Asleep. Dreaming.
If I squint hard enough, I see myself at Veterans Stadium 8/11/79, and the Pirates overcoming an 8-0 deficit to win 14-11

Wasn’t that part of a double header? I forget if it was the first game or the second game. They carried MIlner off the field on their shoulders.
Yes, it was
I do not recall that. It was at home. The Phillies were good. And the Pirates were emerging. I also speculate that if that Steve Carlton faced the Pirates of today, there would be a reasonable chance for a perfect game every time out. I just checked. It was indeed the first game of a doubleheader. The Pirates won the second game 5-2 to complete a four-game sweep.
Thanks for looking it up. Don't recall the second game. Losing to Carlton in the 5th 8-3 ; I only remember the comeback. And the radio call. Wish I could find that somewhere.
Palledorous style.

Reynolds is my favorite player but jesus man. Ever going to hit again?

His legs look like they're hurting him. Reynolds.
I wish that didn't ring so true.
tis the life of a pirates fan
First game this season Civale allowed 0 earned runs. All pitchers circle the Bucs on their calendar to get their stats healthy.
And this will be the Sox first sweep of the season. Nice job being hospitable boys
