Jones was solid except for a leadoff walk and homer to the second batter My Cousin Vinny.. Capra.

Capra hit another off the new pitcher as well.

Burrows had a solid 5 innings only 2 hits and 2 k's 0 runs.

He’s slowly getting there

Didn't even bother tuning in today.

It was fun while it lasted, but soon the Pirates will be back to their accustomed irrelevance. BC prefers it that way. No expectations, no pressure.

Seems so. Makes all the dudes screaming at me to stop being pessimistic all season long look like stable geniuses too.

On a happier note, Duce Gourson and Derek Berg got their first pro hits tonight. Berg has two, the second an inside the park grand slam. It was a cue shot to right and the RF slipped, with the ball rolling past him to the wall.

Severino has a single and two triples.

M Kennedy had a nice game other than some guy hit a homer off of him. Guy looked familiar like he's done that before.

Expand full comment

Ha, that one doesn’t count.

Severino now 4-5.

Jones throwing tonight for Indy- Gives up a walk and homer to our old friend Vinny Capra in the 1st. Sure would be nice to have him back soon

Expand full comment

He finished after 2 2/3! Looks like he threw close to 50 pitches. Let’s get him up to 70 for the Pirates replacing Marco next time around. Hate wasting bullets in the minors

I ask you, what is the definition of insanity? It is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result. How many games is Shelton willing to lose by using Bednar as the pirates closer? Bednar has been terrible this year yet Shelton keeps using Bednar to close games. I think he has blown the last three and the only ones he can save is if the pirates are up by two or more runs because you know he is going to give up at least one run. Shelton is a terrible manager and must be fired immediately. The post season is now almost impossible. They have to make changes. Where is Davis? How can anyone root for this team? All they ever do is fail and break its fans hearts.

Shelton is only a slight problem. The bigger issues are you have an owner not willing to spend and a GM who failed to provide his Manager with any upper level minor league depth. I am not saying Shelton is a good Manager but no good manager is going to want to come manage a organization not committed to winning and any lesser managers will give you the same results with a pathetic roster like the Pirates have.

You're right his improvisational skills are zero. He manages by rote and that will lead to the failure that we have seen.

Major league teams deal with closer issues all the time. Relievers are always highly variable and hardly any maintain their pitching long-term. The singular frustration of being a Pirate fan is knowing that they'll make no effort to deal with the issue.

Important thing to notice is that we’re caught fire when palacios joined the team and then hit rock bottom since he was sent down

Expand full comment

Palacios has nothing to do with the bullpen implosions or Cruz's issues.

Quite possibly, due to being in contention, the worst homestand I can remember.

man does bryan de la cruz stink.

He's a hitter acquired by bumbling Ben. What more is there to say?

He ate sardines and garlic for dinner. Give him a break.

Why is it every time Holderman or Bednar comes into the game lately, I keep picturing the Sargeant Elias death scene in Platoon?

I just envision Shelton saying, "You get to drink from the fire hose!" (UHF reference)

I picture it as the British surrendering the fort in Last of the Mohicans.

That wild toss evens Oneil up at 11 fielding errors and 11 throwing errors.

Now that's what you call a well-balanced defender.

Here is something to consider if this collapse continues? The reality is we could be 7-8 games under .500 by this time next week. Who do the Pirates put on release waivers by the end of the month hoping to save a little money?

Grandal- see if Davis shows anything

Taylor- See if Suwinski is a part of the future

Gonzalez- Give Bubba or Harrington a start or two

Chapman?- this one could go either way- probably save a couple million but would be a terrible PR move

Am I missing anyone?

It’s so deflating to see the hitters battle back night after night, only for the pitching fall apart. Complete 180 from the rest of the season.

Expand full comment

like I posted an hour ago, they'll probably lose by one run. Again.

Expand full comment

Right. Shelton should have left Bednar in to give up 3-4 more runs so we wouldn’t need to worry about losing by one.

Expand full comment

let's get a bloop and a blast, and then another blast

Expand full comment

A bloop, a soft liner and a pathetic three pitch strike out. De La Cruz is officially initiated into Pirate ineptness.

Expand full comment

I’d say that Chapman should be the closer, but then they’d have no one to pitch the eighth.

Try Nicolas. Nothing to lose.
