With all of the encouraging developments on the part of a few players this year, Ben's team is back in his accustomed abode: last place. Great job, Ben!

Can you imagine what people would have said/thought in November 2019 if someone had predicted that we'd be in last place in mid-August of year _5_ of the rebuild?

Ben's a .460 sort of guy so this .483 is overperformance on his end!

Wonder if Tellez is reassessing not booing Bednar.

When Bednar came out for the 9th, I thought why not give Chapman a second inning since to win we knew we'd have to get through the 10th?

When Bednar came back out for the 10th, I thought Shelton is probably the only manager in baseball who would watch his struggling closer pitch a scoreless 9th and still bring him back out for the 10th.

Not saying I'm right, just that I really didn't like the way Shelton managed the 9th or 10th.

Well, these games were blackout for me and in a way I’m glad, I was planning to drive down to SD for one of the games, but now I’m questioning if the team is worth the drive and money.

You already went to San Fran. I'd call it

season over for the SD trip. Btw, PR lost a great champion and personality....RIP Chi Chi.

I have a story about him, last time I visited (over ten years ago!) I called the golf course closest to my hometown, it was ChiChi’s and he answered the called and offer to play with me…..it rained for 7 days straight and I had to come back, so it never happened!!!🥺😭

Expand full comment

Ah man, you'll have the "what ifs" forever, but still special to talk with him on the phone and get an invite!

Expand full comment

It was, I’m making the tee time and we talked for a few minutes and when i finally said that he sounded like ChiChi, his replied was, “that’s because I’m him” and then he asked to join me….

Expand full comment

Yeah really cool. Like hitting the lottery on the phone!

I think they will have a better showing in SD. Make the trip, the Pirates may not win but they won’t give up and that’s something I guess.

Expand full comment

`They might get swept but they will try hard` is a sales pitch to make a drive and buy tickets?!

Expand full comment

They aren’t as talented or deep as some of these teams. Don’t know what you are expecting? If you wanna cheer for a team that wins a lot pick the 300 million dollar Yankees or the 250 million dollar Dodgers. The Pirates need a lot of things to break right in order to win and they just aren’t right now

Sounds like a big "why bother" to me

Expand full comment

I'm just hoping losing 7 straight after the trade deadline is _at least_ enough to get Shelton fired. Hell, they may lose 10 straight.

Expand full comment

I wouldn't expect much wholesale change, but if this doesn't get Haines fired, then... idk... I'll still be here complaining

Expand full comment

If Ben and Shelton are here in March I'm done complaining.

Expand full comment

I wonder if the Pirates can even turn Paul Skenes into a loser too. That would be impressive and sad.

Expand full comment

Looking forward to this offseason when they trade Bednar for fifty cents on the dollar.

Expand full comment

FIFTY? I’d drop dead if they were able to get 20 rn.

Not trading Bednar last deadline when they could’ve gotten a king’s ransom for him was a bad baseball move.

But they kept him, because this is a money laundering operation/marketing firm, not a baseball team.

Expand full comment

Yes, we continually see them make moves that defy baseball logic, but appear geared towards appealing to the fans for the purpose of selling tickets. Just another example of them holding onto guys too long.

Expand full comment

His WAR is almost a full run in the negative side. You have to keep him and hope for a rebound, luckily he’s not expensive.

Expand full comment

You’re 100% right. But he will make close to $6 million next year. I wouldn’t be stunned to see them trade him to free up that money.

Expand full comment

I just came back to correct that, he is making a lot. Shoot, he might find himself released!

Expand full comment

Shelton cares more about loyalty and saving feelings than he does winning. That’s a problem.

Expand full comment

Yeah, he's made it clear from day one that he cares deeply about being liked by his players. That can get in the way of winning.

Expand full comment

I bet they don't like him much in spite of

We stink to high heaven.

What a bunch of losers.

Just set up for more heartbreak….

How many times has a player had a multi hr game for us this year? Seems like we haven’t had many of them

Expand full comment

Ohtani so far hasn't hurt us much right? Good to see The Gambler scuffle.

Expand full comment

Nice play by Bart.

Expand full comment

like seeing chapman and cruz standing next to eachother

Expand full comment

Good to see Shelton still doing the dumb thing where he swaps Tellez for Joe and the other team just runs a RHP instead.

Expand full comment

Why does he think Joe is better than Tellez? What planet is he on?

Expand full comment

He doesn't _think_ at all.

Expand full comment

Genius! This way the Dodgers will be worried about Tellez hitting for somebody against a RHP later.

Cutch with a throwback game! 2013 Cutch!
