John O'Reilly deserves a little love. He had an 8.62 ERA at the end of May. Since then he has a 1.53 ERA in 29.1 innings. He's at 24 straight games with 0-1 runs allowed
Is it just me or have the Pirates basically abandoned any sort of running game.
6th inning is a perfect example, Alika Williams on 1t, Rivas on 3rd and with Hayes up the Mets would basically concede the base, but Williams doesn’t take it. This is an athletic, young fast team. That insists on going station to station and I don’t get it
His defense is way beyond Newman, range and arm isn't even close. Williams is an elite fielder. Newman worked hard and became a reliable fielder on balls he could get to.
Secondly we picked him up for a relief pitcher that was on his way to being dfa'd, not a first round pick.
Again all he has to do is be able to get on base regularly and he'll have good value.
As I said below, it was a great throw from the cutoff man, third base side of home plate, strong throw, not too high. It was still fairly close. You're talking about a run if that throw is a foot towards the first base side of the plate. The catcher was able to drop down the tag into the path of McCutchen sliding because of that throw. I think eight times out of ten he's safe there if everything went exactly the same up until the cutoff throw
I agree, it was two good throws, the outfielder didn't make the relay jump or pick it off the grass, then a very good throw to home. Either of them being off just a little and then it would have been a replay type play at the plate or easily safe.
I didn't mean it wasn't a close play in that sense just that Cutch was out without it being close at the plate.
I think so, that is going to score him most of the time. If that throw is higher or slightly more to the right of home plate (batter view) they don't get him. He had a lot behind it too, strong and accurate
Usually I would have bragging rights over my brother when the Pirates beat the Mets, but he has folded up shop this year. I don't blame him really, being someone who lives and dies on each game, this season is beyond fathomable how bad they are compared to expectations
If you were a betting man who finishes the season with more HR’s between Reynolds (18) and Suwinski (21)? 1 month ago it wouldn’t even have been a conversation
They have to stop putting guys on in front of him if they want homers. It's amazing that the guy who holds the franchise record for fastest to 40 homers to start a career could still be eight RBIs away from 100 for his career three weeks later
I hope by next May end of April we have a lineup with 6 maybe 7 strong. In no particular order cause Shelton would not abide; Hayes, Reynolds, Davis, Rodriguez, Cruz, Peguero and another via trade or free agent. Still like Cutch but more of 3 or 4 games a week DH, 5th outfielder or platoon with Suwinski. Joe fits as right hand platoon or bench bat.
First Base and Outfield is still the 2 real weak spots currently.
Next season they need to acquire a legit starter who can be here for a few years. It doesn't need to be an ace, but a number 3 type who would cost like 3/55 on the open market. And it wouldn't hurt to also bring in another Rich Hill/Vince Velazquez type.
Add in a legit first basemen too. Again, not necessarily a star, but it would be nice to have a guy who goes out there regularly and hit like .280/.350/.470 or something.
I've been following the Pirates for 35 years, and their consistent inability to have a plus hitter at 1B is breathtaking. I would say through all those years, there may be 5 seasons, covering 3 guys, in which you could look at first and not think it needed to be upgraded- Bream, Young a couple years, and maybe LaRoche for a year or two. And these guys obviously weren't stars, just competent.
They need to trade for Schanuel from a position of depth. A package of NickyG, Triolo, Forrester and a couple pitchers like Sullivan and Killington. The Halos have no depth in the upper minors and only a couple prospects.
Also bring in Adell as a potential platoon with Suwinski.

Termarr homers again for the third straight game!
Wait unless im bad at reading, no he didnt lol
Went by a MiLB tweet. Apparently it got rained out?
High A better watch out now that he's cooking
399ft out ........
Hayes is booming these days!
He had 2 flyouts today that would have very possibly went out of PNC.
Another day where I'm just clock watching for when the MiLB games begin
What a letdown of a series after giving the Brewers, Braves, and Reds a handful.

I really want Alika to figure it out offensively.
His defense is so good, if he can just get on base regularly he'll have good value.
Where have I heard that before? Oh yeah, Kevin Newman.
His defense is way beyond Newman, range and arm isn't even close. Williams is an elite fielder. Newman worked hard and became a reliable fielder on balls he could get to.

Well... on a positive note, Endy keeps throwing out runners and that's nice.
We have turned DJ stewart into an allstar
I guess it was worth trying but still ugh, it wasn't even really that close..
It was a couple pretty good throws to get him, but it wasn't close at all.
As I said below, it was a great throw from the cutoff man, third base side of home plate, strong throw, not too high. It was still fairly close. I agree, overall just tough luck for Cutch but still leaves a bitter taste in your mouth seeing it happen.
Well damn, how much was cutch out by?
Close play, not go to the replay close, but still close. It was actually a great throw from the cutoff man that got him. As good as you will see
Sounds like a decent decision to send him then, bummer!
I can’t believe they don’t let you stream games at work.....

There goes the quality start...
Would love to beat this poverty NY franchise in a series

If Jack could maybe get the third of the three true outcomes on occasion again, that would be swell.

It's probably totally coincidental, but I feel like that inexplicable move to lead-off a few weeks ago really threw him off track.
Made him too passive!

Feels pretty nice to have Hayes and Reynolds both hitting well. Hopefully they stay healthy full year next year!

I like Cutch too, just don’t get why he can’t play some outfield, he did well last year and had a few nice play to start the season.....
Soooo belli :)
Bob can't afford that, we'll he can but just can't.

They don't even have a good 1B prospect as far as I'm aware. Truly cursed
