When the Cubs knocked out Falter, I went for a bike ride. It appears that I made the right decision.

Kyle Nicolas as a starter in AAA: 10.59 ERA

As a reliever: 4.91. His first relief appearance was 4 innings following a 1-inning rehab for Yohan Ramirez, really more like a start. If you drop that, it’s 2.93. K/9 in relief is 13.5.

I think he could be a very effective high leverage reliever

So they’re ahead of the Pirates . . . .

Pirate fans.....we are indeed a sorry lot. 10K fans go to Altoona to watch Skenes struggle and unable to get thru an inning. Today, many at PNC

are there specifically to see Cutch try for #300, and Shelton sits him knowing the team's going on the road tomorrow. I'm thinking we are just permanently banned from celebrating anything Pirates.

Shelton things the crowd is there to see him spit!

Meanwhile Jared Jones so far: 4IP 1H 0R 3BBs 7Ks

Wonder how close he's been to that 36% zone rate since promotion?

A bit too on the nose that you can't filter for the statistic on Savant, lol. Control and command, who needs it.

Wasn’t thrilled with his 4 walks, but I loved the rest of the line.

Also Indians 2, Cubs 0. Good to see them winning cause the Pirates seem to be completely lost against Assad.

Gave up a run (homerun) and a walk but added 2 more Ks. 5IP 9K

Cubs high scoring line up is interesting, one all star, but above average, even if it is barely everywhere else.

Bubba Chandler moved to the Development List. I'm sure they could still squeeze a start or two out of him, but this late in the season, it's also a possibility we've seen the last of him this year. Which sucks because I planned the Greensboro trip around when he should be starting.

They just reactivated Hudson Head. Probably juggling roster spots.

Ah yes good to see palacios hitting third after hitting .096 over his last 15 games!

Expand full comment

Among approximately 350 players with 180+ PAs, Palacios is 3rd from last in MLB in OBP. Below him are only Kolten Wong and Dredges.

32 games or so left…

Outfield should be from left to right - Reynolds, Bae, Suwinski. Lio at 2b. There’s absolutely no reason for Palacios to be in the lineup. Also, enough of the openers. Cherington did say today that Ortiz will get a start in KC. Personally, I’d roll out Keller, Oviedo, Ortiz, Contreras, falter and Priester rest of the way. 6 man rotation would be wise at this stage of the season.

Everyone’s down on Palacios, and rightly so, but at least he has 4 HRs and 11 RBI this month. There’s another outfielder taking up space on the roster who, for some reason that totally escapes me, continues to get a lot of fan support even though going into today he was hitting .081 in August and .202 for the year with 0 HRs and 2 RBI over the last month. Beyond my level of comprehension as to why either of these guys are still wearing a Pirate uniform. And while I’m at it, let’s throw Rivas into that same category. Pretending guys can play when they obviously can’t has become a Pirate trademark.

The OF you mention despite struggling for the last 2months still has a .769 ops. That’s 150 pts higher than Palacios. Recency bias in play here. Jack frustrates me beyond belief but I still think he has a future on this team. Just my opinion

Expand full comment

Yeah. Suwinski is obviously struggling, but the Pittsburgh Pirates are not a team that can just toss aside a guy with a .332 OBP and a 106 OPS+. In fact, no team would toss aside such a guy in just his 2nd full season in MLB. He certainly needs to get away from Haines and just watching third-strike pitches sail by him, but that is no reason to do anything except play him everyday in a season that long ago ceased to serve any competitive purpose. I would also observe that if you look at his numbers in the aggregate, he has improved over last season in a similar number of PAs... so there is no reason to be anything but optimistic that he may indeed improve further next year.
