Lots of teams making moves today, trying to get better. As if winning was part of the point or something. Fools.

Trey Mancini released by Reds. If I were BC, I'd make a run at him right now with a 2024 contract too. Our black hole at 1B solved.

I think it would still be a dark shade oaf gray…..He has not been good since leaving Baltimore.

Expand full comment

That was only 12 months ago he was very good. The down year will lower his price tag into BC's range. I think he's only 31.

I like him but think he would have the same issue he had in Baltimore. When they moved the left field wall back, his homers became flyouts. Playing half his games at PNC wouldn't really help, somewhere like Boston would help his bat play up.

Andre Jackson has better shit than Quinn Preister, Roansy Contreras, and Luis Ortiz.

Baseball is wild, man.

Expand full comment

I think we should just claim every dodgers' castaway that we can, they probably have more talent falling off of their 40 man than most teams have outside of their top 10 players

Royals telecast telling story of Holderman's sister with rare syndrome. Special needs. Never heard the story by Pirates announcers.....wth? I may permanently be an OPPO broadcast viewer. Royals pair is top notch.....Rex Hudler on color.

Pirates telecast has definitely talked about it. I believe there was an Inside Pirates Baseball segment about it.

Expand full comment

There was.

I don't get that part of the broadcast on MLB.tv. But that's good to hear.

Really tough situation. Holderman's tatoo on arm is in honor of her.

Ragans interviewed on Royals telecast. Was asked where his uptick in velo came from after 2 TJ's. He gave the credit to Tread Athletics, offseason program. Memo to Priester.

Jackson looks alright tonight lol

His stuff is intriguing. I remember looking at Statcast after one of his Indy starts, he had 50% swing and miss 😶. Change gets a lot, which had 6 whiffs tonight

Expand full comment

Did the Dodgers eff up with him?

Expand full comment

I hope so, would be nice to get a win now and then

Expand full comment

Alternatively, we could play the Royals all year.

Expand full comment

Sure looks like it- good fastball, bugs bunny change with a decent curveball and good control. Wonder if they give him a shot at rotation next year?

Expand full comment

He should get at least 4 or 5 more starts. Should get a pretty good idea how he does going multiple times through lineups. Looks serviceable in a backend or long man role so far.

Expand full comment

It sure helps to play teams like the Royals. Makes the Pirates look pretty good by comparison. Unfortunately it also reminds you how actual good teams must feel when they play the Pirates.

3 for his last 4 at bats, needs a double in his next at bat. I guess a homerun would be alright as well.

So . . . Jared Triolo is in AAA and Vinny Capra is batting sixth. Jeenyus!!

Just giving him one last game before they claim Giolito tomorrow. Going to have the reverse of the "Curse of the Maggi"!

Who am I kidding???

Expand full comment

I don't know why they don't just claim one or more of the LAA guys and flip them to a major league team that's trying to win.

Expand full comment

no more trades after the deadline

Put him back on waivers.

Expand full comment

I forgot that capra is on the roster, and I am upset about it all over again

Expand full comment

The Braves guys play all the time. Not comparing the Pirates talent level to theirs, but it demonstrates that players in their prime really don't need a ton of days off. Why is Key sitting for Capra? It's not lie they have to keep him fresh for October.

Expand full comment

He’s sitting because he has back issues. It couldn’t possibly be clearer at this point that he needs to rest it.

Expand full comment

Look at the bottom of that lineup. Swallow hard and just look at 6 through 9. A combined batting average of .197. If the first five don’t do it, it ain’t gonna get done. That line up alone should get any manager fired and banned from the game for life. Geeeeez. Come on at least try to pretend to look credible.

Expand full comment

Really blame Cheringtoon more for this. Capra, Williams and Rivas shouldn’t be in the majors. Jack probably shouldn’t be either, unless they had a real hitting coach. But who replaces Jack and Rivas? Actual major league teams have OFs and 1Bmen who can hit, or at least have enough potential to hit that it’s worth trying them. But Bumbling Ben can’t even make a pretense of it. How can you be a ML GM and be so completely unable to find corner players with the faintest semblance of hitting ability?

Expand full comment

That's like when someone has "those pictures" from the Xmas party! Also it's an off day on Thursday so he wanted to see if he could cool off Hayes early.

Here is my idea. Have Nutting sign over title to Ohtani and Trout as the new owners and they just pay Nutting $15 million a year forever as compensation for the title.

The Pirates get Trout and Ohtani. Those two pay themselves whatever they want and focus on winning baseball. :)

Expand full comment

The Pirates are currently worth somewhere around $1.3 billion. At $15 million a year that’s around 87 years to pay off just the principal in todays dollars. Seems unlikely.

How about instead someone convinces Nutting to sell 500,000 shares in the team at $2,600 a share or 250,000 shares at $5,200 a share? He gets his money (yes that’s $1.3 billion) up front and fans take over ownership? I’ll go get my checkbook if you will.

I want Marte too

Our Marte goes by Peguero.

Marte is washed I think

I could go for that, as long as Schanuel can play an outfield corner.

I guess I owe Pirate management a apology because the Angels just proved that they have the worst FO in baseball!

Expand full comment

But we should totally copy their player dev policies, they're such a model of organizational success.

Expand full comment

Aren’t we already?

Expand full comment

I think their problem is owner meddling in operations just as much as their FO lol

Expand full comment

Nobody ever ask these owners the hard questions and they all hide behind their tax-deductible charities. It really seems to come down to the individual owners and their minority partners whether or not they actually want the franchise to be as successful on the sports side of the business as they are on the financial side. It's appears it's easier for most baseball owners to make money in every conceivable way without actually having to provide a product the fans really want, lol.

Replace owners with players in last sentence, ex., something isn’t right in your sport when Dick Mountain makes the same or more per year than Sidney Crosby. There is always context.

I don’t know, I wouldn’t count the Pirates out. At least the Angels tried some things to strengthen their team that didn’t work and now are trying to dump salary for their future. The Pirates just keep doing the same things that haven’t worked in the past hoping for different results. You know what they call that.

Expand full comment

True, I shouldn't count the Pirates out yet especially since they actually extended Shelton. I guess we will have to see if they keep someone like Haines also. The White Sox dumped their front office or I would have considered them worse then the Angels and Bucco's, lol.
