Not to be a buzzkill but the Pirates fight in the 9th was because the Brewers put in a pitcher making his third MLB appearance. He now has been scored on every time and has an ERA over 42.
This was the equivalent of the Steelers putting in 3rd stringers with 5 minutes left and giving up 2 TDs while playing prevent defense but still winning by 3 scores.
IIRC, he's gone six before (at least five). I tend to think it's more a really bad night, given his control issues. He hasn't shown much, if any, of Bad Andre since he's been here.
Disappointed with shutting down Skenes. He could learn soooo much in 2-3 more starts, as could the pitching coaches. There's nothing like game competition. The 6.2 IP is a far cry from the targeted 20 IP that was originally stated by BC.....?? Maybe he is experiencing some dead arm Idk.
It is disappointing mainly because I wanted to see him pitch against Crews. That’s probably just selfishness on my part though. Honestly what would that have proven anyway? I just hope he stays healthy and learns to rely more on his breaking pitches and locating his fastball with movement instead of trying to throw 100 mph all of the time especially given the epidemic of arm injuries in pitchers these days and how easily major league hitters can turn around flat velocity anyway.
He’ll get plenty of MiL time next year while they’re playing service time manipulation games. Honestly, any IP he got the rest of this year would be a waste, maybe with a little risk added. A major league team would have him competing for a rotation spot next March, but the Pirates will have him twiddling his thumbs in AAA next year while Nickels counts his nickels.
The best thing I heard about the Angels is that they know their development team is so bad, which is why they’re drafting first rounders who need little development!
No doubt he's in minors til June. I'm thinking more along the lines of pitch shape, grip position, and ball movement data, they would have a little more AA data going into the winter against quality hitters. I'd rather he have more data now. He's a smart guy......hate to see them messing with his mechanics in the Spring after he gets hit hard if they could identify something in the fall.
“I think he’s gonna stay at second base. His lower half is getting really thick, but he has very good bat speed. Patient with a good eye. Ball jumps off his bat. He’s still really young, so that has to come into play.
“He has severe bat speed. Everyday player. You can tell he loves to play the game. Excellent enthusiasm. Defense is still a question. Thick frame but quick twitch.”
I’m not even sure about 2B. I saw him trip over himself on three separate plays in one game. The quick twitch comment is accurate. His reactions can be excellent, but the frame doesn’t always go along.
The bat speed comment is also accurate. I’ve seen one other teenager hit the ball as freaking hard as regularly as him. That was Vlad Jr.
There was never really any serious thoughts he could move over to SS. 3B would be a good spot too. We got him for the hit tool and that's going to be his calling card to get to the show.
If he were 6'2" every single scout who *incorrectly* projected his hit tool would've been *correctly* calling him a power prospect.
Any scout with a shred of humility would admit projecting a big league hit tool from a teenager in high school is nothing but a wild-ass guess to begin with. The only honest reason they did that with Termarr is because he's short and they're incapable of seeing their own bias.
So, Skenes is going on the development list and won’t pitch again this year. No Crews/Skenes matchup this week after all. He’s tired. He’s 21 years old and he’s tired. Crap. Thanks again Ben.
Doesn't explain why everyone around the Bucs was saying he'll do 20 innings, when he was cut off at 6+. Or why they let him promote his upcoming start during last night's broadcast. If I were him, I'd be pissed off as I looked like an ass talking up facing Crews.
Skenes seemed rather short last night, ie frustrated maybe, that everybody else makes decisions about him and for him. I thought the John Baker "new kinder" Bucs way was to fully involve the players in their devt., get buy-in, a two way street.
If you watched the CWS, you would've seen him throw a ton of pitches. Lots of leverage pitches and they're gaining nothing by having him throw a couple more times. Kid was on TV last night saying he feels sore after throwing. Shut him down and get him ready for spring training.
Thinking he will still be doing some throwing. Maybe he will get to throw some th Cruz instead of Crews in a month or so. That would interest me much more.
Sounds like an ugly game overall but the Buccos showed some fight in the 9th and that's nice. Let's win today.

In recent seasons they would have rolled over anyway and not scored.
May Pirates still don't score anything... progress???? Lol

The more I see numbers on the 2023 draft guys in Low-A, the more I think they were specifically seeking two-seamers
The ML game was a mismatch, but some good stuff in the minors. Termarr, White and McAdoo have all gone deep and Nick G has three hits.
Well, Stratton didn't walk the first batter, so that's a plus.
Good choice by producer to go to the dogs in a 7-0 game.
how are we supposed to get past the first round of the playoffs if they play like this?
That couldve been much worse thankfully
About the only way that could've been worse would've been if the spotted laternflies they were showing actually flew out of my TV into my house.
Andre seems to be pretty much a 1 time through/3 inning kinda guy
IIRC, he's gone six before (at least five). I tend to think it's more a really bad night, given his control issues. He hasn't shown much, if any, of Bad Andre since he's been here.
He’s an Opener or a long man out of the pen on a good team.
Is anyone watching the game to know if bae got a bad jump or if hes still bad at stealing bags based on his speed
Had an ok lead and a good jump, catcher threw strike from knees, still beat it but slide off base for a split second while tag applied.
Before replay it would have been a perfect slide.
Good info, thanks so much!
Univ of Utah (Jackson). How do they even compete in the PAC-12? Yet Dodgers found him.

You're not half as disappoint as the folks who bought tickets to that game.

YEAH and super successful clubs like the Angels would have him in the show already!!!
The best thing I heard about the Angels is that they know their development team is so bad, which is why they’re drafting first rounders who need little development!

Not the same as live games, but im sure they will continue to build their data on him in the back fields
3 more wins. Just 3 more.
Now just 2! Well and I still want 11 😁
Keep on counting!
But I want 12 more wins. That will still get your 3 and the Bucs would then have 76 on the year
Braves coming up. It’ll be a struggle to win 3 innings in that series.
I seem to recall them splitting a series with them a couple weeks ago. Was I dreaming?
I hope to tie 5 innings!
What They’re Saying: Termarr Johnson, 2B, Pirates
“I think he’s gonna stay at second base. His lower half is getting really thick, but he has very good bat speed. Patient with a good eye. Ball jumps off his bat. He’s still really young, so that has to come into play.
“He has severe bat speed. Everyday player. You can tell he loves to play the game. Excellent enthusiasm. Defense is still a question. Thick frame but quick twitch.”

Termarr Thicccccson it is
Definitely, totally, not at all Willie Calhoun

Hell, make that college too.
Nick Gonzales: good hitter, but short. MUST be all about the hit tool.
Not saying Termarr is a lock.
But he clearly can hit. I'll take a .300 hitter any day of the week with or without the power, that would be refreshing change vs TTOs.
That ain't gonna be Termarr, and it'll make him no more a failure because scouts got it wrong.

lol
Ditto!
I see where Skenes was transferred to the developmental list. The reason is to begin his prep for the 2024 season. Works for me 😁

Something is afoot.

It didn't sound like it with Skenes last night.
that is a decoy
it truly is to rest him up for our stretch run
Kinda has to doesn’t it? Isn’t pitching a way to prep for…uh…pitching? Whatever.
If you watched the CWS, you would've seen him throw a ton of pitches. Lots of leverage pitches and they're gaining nothing by having him throw a couple more times. Kid was on TV last night saying he feels sore after throwing. Shut him down and get him ready for spring training.
