Ben & Derry deserve a lot of the blame for this fiasco, due to their dimwitted insistence that every player is a utility player. If Bae is a second baseman, play him at second. If he's a center fielder, keep him there and put a second baseman at second. They have Nick G. He's no glove wizard, but he IS a second baseman. But, no, he's been stuck in AAA because they have to have Mario Mendoza and Ben's cousin Vinny. You have to wonder whether trying to win major league games will ever take precedence over Ben & Derry just playing around.
I don't understand the people who defend Shelton. I just don't, and I never will. He just doesn't make good decisions consistently, and you only need a few obviously bad decisions like in this game to cost a team the post-season. 5 bad decisions can change a team from 74-74 to 69-79. If the Pirates were 74-74 right now, they would be 2 1/2 games out of a Wild Card. All the people defending Shelton should think about that.
That was a long bounce meaning the throw was so short, Rivas did have some reaction time to play the long bounce. And his glove is on the his right hand where the bounce went. That was not impossible as Wehner called it, it's fieldable and he muffed it.
And this is a good time to pound the table about Robert Stephenson. He's now the 8th inning set-up guy for Rays. About a 2.50 era and 0.00 last 7 games. Don't know what the heck BC was thinking.
This is probably the first time in a decade I've watched a Pirates vs Yankees game and not felt compelled to wonder about their backup catcher and if we could use him.
i think Austin Wells is going to have a good career
he is one i will look out for if i ever come across a yankees box score

I'm going to be optimistic, maybe this game will put us in position to draft Kurtz.
Bae pulled a Steve Sax at the worst time possible.
Shelton learned nothing from John McNamara. If you normally make a defensive switch late when you've got the lead, then keep doing it.
Danny Ozark was the original...failing to replace Luzinski in game three of the 1977 NLCS....
Phillie fans still have not gotten over that one.
The one in Boston is the one I remember.
And you have to ask why is Williams is even on this team if it’s not for his late inning defense?

Wow, horrible job by Holderman, horrible defense.
When you get gifted a called 1st strike like the one on Florial, you can't walk that guy.
Candy ass arms can't be in the IF.
During an “argument “ with Lee over at the old place I warned him that this actual situation will happened.
I’ve said this so many times, Bae’s arm is shit,!!!”!!
Blame Bae, and he’ll get the error, but a good major league first baseman picks that throw fairly routinely.
Not that hop. Rivas would've been better off trying to block the thing. That hop was armpit high.

Say what? That was a wicked hard hop.
But what do I know I’ve only been watching baseball for 50+ years.
Well shit

BC fulfilled his life's dream of getting Mario Mendoza.
Pouring salt in the wound, now they show Clay Holmes in the pen.....
Well here we go, white knuckle time
This is probably the first time in a decade I've watched a Pirates vs Yankees game and not felt compelled to wonder about their backup catcher and if we could use him.
They could probably use Delay.
Outside of judge, their position player group is arguably worse than ours imo
Jones with a nice start in Indy, 6 innings 1 hit 1 walk 8 strikeouts 0 runs.
He's been hot recently, way to finish the year strong!
I would have to assume bednar is down tonight, right?
It depends if he told Shelton if he's good.
Fingers crossed that the plan was Mlod then holderman
That was the plan. The plan failed.
I even liked the plan, shows what i know lol
Holderman has basically a 3:1 K/BB ratio on the season. So he was as good an option as we had. Seemed to me he was working extra fast tonight.
Yeah he's not comfortable as a closer.
Cmon Hayes!!
Good shit!
Ugh hope their pitcher is ok! Scary stuff
There was a pitcher or two who were wearing helmets several years ago. But that's been it.
