Bell fired

Shelton next

And the Reds get a head start on search/interviewing Schumaker.

And Bell was "Family" in Cincy. 82-80 in 2023, 76-81 in 2024.

We can only hope that Shelton will be fired

They're setting a standard. They've had at least as many big injuries as we've had, but they're not using that as an excuse like we hear from our leaders. Instead it's as simple as not meeting their goals (quote is from their president Krall):

"We felt a change was needed to move the Major League team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected, and we need to begin focusing on 2025."

Missed the game live today but my goodness, Paul effin Skenes!

Your National League rookie of the year.

Expand full comment

Doubt he will be able to beat out a full time position player like Jackson Merrill 21. Chances are that he finishes second to Merrill who stands out on a team with excellent talent - 24 HR, 132 wRC+, 5.1 fWAR, playing excellent D in Center Field, a premium position for 29 of the 30 MLB teams. Merrill, Skenes, Chourio Trifecta.

I'm a stats guy, but, respectfully, this is total bullshit.

From your mouth to FanDuels ears!

So Cook and Yorke have one more home run in 17 combined games for the Pirates than BDLC has in 41 games. And modest home run power was the one thing he had going for him.

Expand full comment

And BDLC has 48K/2 BB. What was it that both he and IKF came in and did not look like anything they had previously been with the Marlins (BDLC) and Yankees, Blue Jays (IKF). If neither makes it to Pirate Camp in February 2025, it would not hurt the team effort.

BDLC I do not know, but IKF is better than what he has shown Pirate Fans and it's hard to grasp how a guy with his MLB experience could go that bad that fast if he has put all of himself into it!

The Haines Toxin is especially transmissible in July and August. They should have worn masks.

Hopefully this seals the ROY for Skenes.

It's going to be Jackson Merrill, who is finishing strong for the playoff bound Padres. Skenes will get 2nd, and we lose a year of service time. An outstanding season for him......but it's going to cost us as Pirate fans.

Expand full comment

I quoted Merrill's stats earlier of HR's (24), wRC+ of 132, 5.1 fWAR, and exc D in CF. I did not know Skenes fWAR early this AM but it came later at 4.2 fWAR. Glad for all yinzers that we have Paul Skenes, but that's too large a gap in fWAR to overcome.

Whatever else happens, I hope they just shut him down now. Call it a win before some dumbass thing happens.

Expand full comment

Excellent perspective - we do not need to see another start from him in 2024. How much will BC suffer for holding him in AAA, and do you think this may change his approach to Bubba Chandler next year?

Booyah!!!!! 73 in the books!! Solid game from the pen to follow up Skenes. Raise it!!

Man I do love your enthusiasm despite all the bad baseball played this year. Very admirable trait you have sir.

Expand full comment

I love baseball and it is even more fun when the Bucs win!

Expand full comment

What the hell? 4 shutout innings from the Buc's pen? Inconceivable!

Expand full comment

Vizzini, I don’t think that word means what you think it means … 😁

Raise it!!

If Skenes is done for season, he finishes it with an ERA under 2. Just an incredible season.

Expand full comment

And sadly, the ONLY Pirate to exceed expectations for the 2024 season…

Expand full comment

Is Skenes going to win the cy young this year?

Expand full comment

It's gotta be Sale. He deserves it. Even if Skenes had 30 starts, he'd still project to be 0.5 fWAR behind Sale.

Expand full comment

Sale has been great. No denying it, but fWAR is hardly a be all end all stat for SP’s. Plenty of stats would favor Skenes if one extrapolates his stats over a full season.

Expand full comment

Which ones?

Expand full comment

How about ERA+?

Skenes is 213. Sale is 175.

Expand full comment

Nice find!

Expand full comment

He would’ve if BC had done the right thing back in March.

Expand full comment

That would have been a risk by someone who doesn't seem to like to take risks.

Expand full comment

No, but he will be on a lot of ballots.

Not really anything not to love about his stats this year. Next year for sure.

BOOM!!!! Goes Yorke!,

Expand full comment

Yorke town cannonball!

Expand full comment

Did you coin that? If so, you should sell it to Brown.

Ha, Ha, I guess I did. Was thinking of the musical Hamilton.

Would like to see more efficiency from Mr. Skenes.

You’d marry Pam Anderson and yearn for bigger tatas.

I'm actually a B cup kinda guy.

ASSMAN.

And legs. Legs are important!

Expand full comment

Skenes has some crazy movement on his offspead stuff today.

Expand full comment

That went far far away!

Expand full comment

What was the distance?

Expand full comment

442ft by statcast but it looked further lol

Find it interesting that Bell is playing same 10 guys all three games, not even substitutions in the two blowouts. Is he feeling the heat, trying to make a push for a .500 season? He has 2 rookie OFers on the bench......letting them watch the action!

Well spotted...someone else must've noted that as well

I appreciate your observance of what other teams, most teams, do in similar positions as our beloved Pirates.
