Narrow escape from another 1-0 loss. Thanks to AAA call-up Peggy with his clutch double. Our 3 hits about on par for the year. Five more days til Haines shown the door. But any win is a good win.

In the midst of so much disappointing baseball, tonight’s game was fun! Really happy for Peggy and encouraged by Ortiz.

The peripherals might not support it, but Ortiz is finishing with a shiny ERA. That what they pay for. Great year.

The peripherals shouldn't be too bad, strikeouts per inning probably a little low and I'd assume his fip might be around 4.00 or higher but that's good in my mind. Really like him as a long man spot starter but he's earned the opportunity to win a starting job in spring training.

Not sure how this season affected his perceived value, ex-top 100 prospect with a seemingly successful transition from bullpen to starting role, he may be a guy you think about trading in the offseason.

With some guys, the peripherals and ERA never seem to match. And Luis' BB rate is way better, and his K rate better, than last year. I'm inclined to see him as a guy who's still settling in to whatever he's going to be, and trending well.

The Brewers are 5th in MLB in runs (surprised the heck out of me to see that), so it wasn't a bunch of boobs he shut down.

Hard to take him out of rotation at this point.

Assuming we don’t add a SP in the offseason, I have him as our 4th starter with Oviedo and Falter battling for the 5th spot until Chandler is ready.

Oviedo's gonna need a lot of time in AAA. Some guys need several months, or longer, to get their command back, and his was shaky to begin with. He strikes me as a very poor candidate to go straight from TJ to a ML rotation.

You're right. For some reason, I thought he had his surgery right after last season but now I see that it wasn't until December that they actually did the surgery.

Given that, the uncertainty about pitchers health in general, and not wanting to assume Chandler does what Jones did, it seems that we need to add a SP this offseason. Perhaps another lefty. Counting on everything going right with Skenes-Keller-Jones-Ortiz-Falter, even just through April or May, would be foolish.

But of course that takes money away from bigger needs and it's hard to feel very optimistic that our roster will be significantly improved with Nutting's restrictions on payroll and Cherington's mediocre record on acquiring talent.

Agree. And because BC's Pirates always get that marginal back-end veteran they hope to flip in June/July, I think we should expect one to be acquired.

Based on history, Bucs will need a minimum of 7 starters and a spot guy, or more likely 9 guys who can go 4-5 innings to avoid the dreaded pen games. With Oviedo, Chandler, the current five and that savvy old vet, they'll be in a little better shape than this year.

Brault had a great point in the post game, noting that four of the Brews relievers Bucs have faced were all starters at one point this season.

Just sit Reynolds for these last games. He is so toast right now. Hate that he is finishing up so badly on what was a very good season otherwise.

bucsws2024's avatar

Nah. He's dipped down this far a couple of times this year. I imagine having his season end with his current #s is not what he wants. He wants .280+/.800+. I say let him go for it.

He had a .695 OPS in May which was bad. Before his 0-3 and 2 k’s thus far tonight he was at .633 OPS for Sept. Maybe he can do something positive in the next 4 games but he stinks to high heaven right now. Probably mentally broken from the performance of the team after the trade deadline.

Thinking a little on young Liover, I'd sort of missed on the part where he's really never *performed* well since rookie ball.

His prospect billing has been one of age-relative-to-performance and general tools as he advanced rapidly through the system. But he's yet to really hit at all of those levels. At some point it seems like the performance has to catch up, a la Cole Tucker.

Have the Pirates' AFL participants been mentioned here? I'm kinda tired from hurricane prep so I haven't been keeping up totally. Just in case:

Brandan Bidois, RHP

Mike Burrows, RHP

Khristian Curtis, RHP

Derek Diamond, RHP

Eddy Yean, RHP

Geovanny Planchart, C

Termarr Johnson, 2B

Kervin Pichardo, INF

Sammy Siani, OF

The inclusion of Yean may mean they've signed him to a MiL deal for next year. I'm pretty sure he's due for free agency this fall.

It's massive enough that we'll likely see a lot of rain on the west side of it. The following up storm worries me, cause I'm supposed to be out of town, and my mom and sister will be in Nola watching my son. But Helen started out straight for us in early forecasts before a hard east turn.
