This might be a bad time to point this out, but Busch just hit his 5th HR. has a 1000+ OPS, and has produced .5 WAR in 16 games. The Cubs got him and a AAAA reliever for a pitching prospect, their #8 prospect, and a lottery ticket. It's not as if the Pirates needed a 1Bman or anything... ,

Tough loss

BAD loss showing a lot of the Pirate weaknesses.

Just my opinion but, the bullpen is a weakness not a strength, Henry Davis is a bust and O'Neil Cruz isn't nor will he ever be a star player.

Expand full comment

Agree with first comment at least the short relievers, Davis needs a lot of work and might not be ready for prime time and Cruz will eventually be a star but not at short stop nor in Pittsburgh.

Admittedly a big fan of diaz’s walkout

He's a cool cat. I would probably like him if he didn't play for the most underachieving and hard-to-like team in baseball.

This is a game we are going to really need to shake off

I haven’t watched every game but this is the worst baseball I’ve seen them play.

Expand full comment

Look at the bright side. We get to see Diaz in his return.

or come back and win.

The Mets might be a surprise contender. They won’t challenge the Braves, but with Ottavino and Diaz, they’re going to win a lot of close games.

I think they have the highest payroll in baseball, but I get what you say. People really aren't mentioning them as contenders.

Expand full comment

$55MM of that payroll is Scherzer and Verlander though.

Last year the Mets were preseason 8 to 1 to win the world series tied for second best. This year they are currently 50 to 1 which puts them in the bottom 15 teams. The expecatations were so high last year because of all of their signings. Great point on Scherzer and Verlander. This year not counting retained contracts, the Mets are still in the top 3 or 4 in salaries, but the expectations seem very low. I like your sleeper pick.

On paper, they are a serious contender for a wild-card, but they have a track record of being hopeless underachievers... worse maybe than the Padres,.. whose underachieving reaches back only 1 season.

Does anybody teach these pitchers how to hold runners on?

Expand full comment

Strike zone has been pretty bad but this one is squarely on Shelton and Marin. Everyone watching the game could tell that Perez was finished before those 3 runs scored in the 6th for the Mets. The magic of Haines is also piling up the strikeouts. Offensive Ks are simply becoming offensive.

Some terrible ABs from Cruz these days

Send him down to learn first base.

Expand full comment

He would just pout like when they tried him in the OF. Not saying that wasnt probably a good move looking at the long-term, but he doesnt seem like a team first guy who will do whatever to help

Expand full comment

If the Bucs can't move Cruz off of SS and Cutch from DH because of 'personality' issues, then they need a new management regime.

Expand full comment

His ABs are not even close to competitive the past few days.

Expand full comment

It's sad to say but his ABs have become something like Baez's these days

This #42 pitcher for Mets looks pretty good.
