Bart had his moment....couldn't capitalize.

Jones didn't give us his best effort. Ir happens. The offense scores a run. That always happen.

Back in the day, someone told Drysdale that Kofax pitched a two hitter. Drysdale's response: "Did he win?"

Nicholas was all fastballs, slider and one CB were balls, FB was no hittable today.

Wow, Nicolas!

Three runs in the extra inning and two in the other 27 (I’m hoping to be proven wrong since we still have the 9th). Had hoped that the outburst in the 10th would help them relax and start hitting, but evidently not.

Uhh Triolo, there's a play going on right behind you. Put the tag on....

Lee looks like a nice player Giants got from KBO.

Same style of player, but I don't think Bae could reach his level. Maybe he'll get another look in CF in '25.

That was another chance that the Pirates missed to upgrade at a position of need for the long-term. I agree though. I don't think Bae has his tools.

I had hoped we’d go after Lee, but was surprised at how much he got from the Giants given what all the national outlets were predicting. Had I known that would be the price, I wouldn’t have had any hope that we’d sign him.

6/$113M I had no idea he had that kind of resume, or value!

On site report, Davis sucks.

I think today would have been the last one for him except Grandal hasn’t played in several days due to rainouts.

This will be a good test on how Jones responds today and in his next start. You never wish adversity on anybody but it is important to face it and see how you respond. He may just not have it today which happens. Game still within reach. Keep them at 3!

Adversity happens whether you wish for it or not. Jones responded the way you would hope.

Casuals are going freak out the first time Skenes gets blown up — if any of them are still aware of this hapless franchise by the time he comes up, that is.

Joe not helping with that route to the ball.

Ideally, you get to play at the location where the Pirates happen to be.

Was about to post on previous thread about Shelton, but will continue the discussion here.

I think the players generally like playing for him.

But that doesn't mean he's the right guy for the job. His in-game management/strategies are fair to poor. There's no way he should have pitched Chapman two games in a row Thurs and Fri. He threw 24 pitches, the majority from 100-103 mph on Thurs. He sends him out on Friday and he only could hit 97 and mostly went off-speed and thru only 8 strikes in 19 pitches. You don't do that with a max effort FB pitcher like Chapman.

He shouldn't have thrown Bednar 3 games in a row, it's only April! Didn't he learn from a prior season about over-using Bednar, when we lost him for 2 months?

I'll stick with my -6 WAR of Shelton. He could be credited with a couple wins in the 9-2 start such as hunting Delay and Alika and squeezing home a run. But he can also be credited with a few losses such as PH with Telez the other night. He also couldn't keep up with Brandon Hyde's substitutions of DH/catcher (Adley). He also doesn't put the steal sign on with the right counts and the right base runners. In any case, he's a -1 WAR per month, equalling -6 WAR over course if the season. Not good imo, but everyone's entitled to their own opinion here.

My biggest beef with Shelton at the moment is that he had a background as a hitting coach and hitting coordinator and yet he has maintained Andy Haines on staff as hitting coach and is (coaching-wise) responsible for the horrible hitting over the last several years. Terrible track record!

Expand full comment

Yes there's a lot of issues that fall under the manager's responsibility, and one is his selection of coaches and how effective they are at their jobs. Shelton doesn't get good grades for Haines, Cora, Brock....and I'm not sold on Marin or Kelly either.

I got him at +4

I think he's done better this year than years past. I think running all those bullpen games at the end of last season was a good exorcise for him. I think he is hamstrung in some ways by the FO making bad decisions on players and personnel: such as insisting that Ortiz remain a multi-inning guy instead of a setup guy or acquiring an OF who cannot really play OF (Olivares) when they already have a DH-only guy in Cutch. There are worse managers in MLB, but there are a lot who are better too. Quatraro has been really good for KC this year. I wish the Pirates would have hired him, but I'm happy that he is with KC.

I agree with this general assessment. I think ultimately players impact the W/L more than the manager so would probably say he is more -4 WAR based on my opinion of how much managers actually impact the game. However, I'll put that under 'splitting hairs' and not some major disagreement on your thoughts.
