Jones told Jason Mackey he was going to shove, and he shoved. What a debut!

Watching Cruz butcher the shortstop position makes the Tellez over Santana signing even more dubious

According to MLB.com, the Pirates outrighted CSN and Ali Sanchez to Indy. I assume that means they cleared waivers, but I think Sanchez could still refuse assignment. Which would be fine. Nothing on Wolf yet.

Does this mean if a team claims Wolf, then they have to be on their major league roster ?

I think the claiming team has to put him on the 40 man, and since he has options they can option him to the minors right away. Doesn't have to be on the 26-man active roster.

Pirates also released Cristopher Cruz. He was their big int'l bonus guy in 2019, but never showed much.

It's early, but Henry looks pretty good behind the plate.

I think the young pitchers like pitching to him.

And he's drawing walks even if he's not hitting yet. Good D + walks = good catcher.

Just missed a couple of hits in the first game, he'll heat up shortly.

No doubt about it.

3-0 just about nullifies the handicap on Fangraphs predicated standings in the NL Central race.

If you knew that, in the first three games, the starters would average just over 5 IP, Bednar would pitch just one meaningless inning, Chapman would pitch one inning, and the #2-4 RH relievers wouldn't be on the roster, how many games would you guess they'd win?

Well... in fairness, the team that they are playing are missing their top 3 starting pitchers and had the stupid idea of starting A. J. Puk in the off-season... so I'll temper my enthusiasm for now, but you can't be better than 3-0 at this point, so there is some hope in Pirateland.

Two years ago, it wouldn't have mattered. Good teams beat up on bad teams, and throughout Cherington's tenure bad teams have beaten up on the Pirates. So this is something different, whatever Miami's situation.

Of course, now we'll see the results of the brilliant idea of putting Falter and Gonzales in the rotation.

I'd withhold judgment. The Marlins kinda look like a mess. It's a good thing that the Pirates are beating a messy team, but that meets the threshold for them being a non-crap team. TBD on the good part. Particularly, OF hitting depth worries me at the 162-game scale.

They’ve gotten away with a lot of mistakes and boneheaded plays. A team like the Braves or Dodgers would capitalize. But the Marlins didn’t, and the Bucs did capitalize on Miami’s mistakes, so I’ll gladly take the wins.

Winning tends to be self-sustaining. They are playing confidently, getting clutch hits at the right times, pitching well, and so far, they have been adequate defensively. A very nice way to start he season!

Pitching and hitting exist in separate universes for awards purposes. They really should add a pitching RoY. Devin Williams is the only pitching RoY of the 2020s.

Is Shelton trying to fool Tellez, the fans or both by bringing Rowdy in as a defensive replacement, lol. At some point in time this move will cost a game or two.

He’s probably using him to get him some action with all the lefties they’re facing. I mean…how does that not cross anyone’s mind here in a game they’re up six?

Expand full comment
John Six's avatar

Well it's a good thought but at this point Miami didn't have too many if any at all left handers still available for him to face.

Only Shelton would use a guy in the 37th percentile for defensive run value as a defensive sub.

Tellez is not awful, the stats are slightly on the plus side, but so are those for Joe. This is not a negative, but also not necessary.
