So, remind me of the draft lottery eligibility rules. Can the Pirates get the top pick next year or will they have dipped into that well once too often?

Melkel's avatar

They can, Griffin wasn't a top 6 pick, the pirates will not be eligible in '27 if the get a top 6 pick in '26.

Rockies, Angels, Cardinals, and the Nationals first pick will be pick 10 at best in '26.

The Rockies are the only team in a worse situation than the Pirates. Worst team in baseball and not eligible for the 26 lottery.

This team has managed to even take the fun out of watching Skenes starts. I think it’s time to take a nice long break from paying any attention to this trash heap.

When does Shelton get fired? That isn’t really the answer to the Pirates problems but it would be a first step. I guess you need to hold onto BC through the season due to the draft, but he must go too. Does anybody actually know Nutting? Is he a man? I don’t care about the making money thing. Clearly he is making money. Doesn’t he have any testosterone? His team is getting humiliated.

Imo, fire BC now. Let the new GM hire the new manager and if needed, use an interim GM for the draft. Rip off the bandaid now.

I'm with ya, they need to get rid of Cherington first if not both together.

My guess is still the 15th but this Thursday is an off day if Bob doesn't feel like kicking the can.

I’m with you. Nutting has to do something if he has any pride or responsibility at all. Year six of the rebuild and they’re as bad as they were when this started. This is a complete embarrassment.

The whole team just wants to get to the offseason. Birdbrain gave up on the season the moment last season ended. Players just getting the memo now.

I should say this organization is rotten all the way through. No urgency; no desire to win; no evidence of basic competence in what they do.

My son and I bond over many things , but baseball is our primary connection point. Until this season, Pirate baseball was something we enjoyed together. We still love the game, but the Pirates are no longer a connection point for us because they’ve become so irrelevant in the sport. He’s (thankfully ) gotten to the point where he no longer asks if they won.

And it sucks.

He and I will always love the game, but I’m afraid our experience is one that is shared with many others.

More time fly fishing isn’t the worst thing in the world!

Right there with you. My 12-year old loves baseball and loves the pirates but every July he checks out to follow Steelers training camp because “at least they try.” We live in Philly and all of his friends make fun of him for being a Pirates fan. Kids in little league bust his balls relentlessly. One kid told him the Pirates are so bad their fans are trying to commit suicide at the games.

I live in So Cal, made sure my son follows the Dodgers, don’t want this for him. Besides his initials are LA so he gets a kick out of that.

Maybe hiring two hitting coaches (Hague and Vogelbach) with so little experience wasn’t the best idea, and clearly not the solution to our problems.

Expand full comment
MB 21's avatar

What would it matter? Shelton was previously a hitting coach. Many of these guys have simply proven they can't hit and yet this GM never accepts that.

Expand full comment
TNBucs's avatar

Right, Haines was a scapegoat and it was silly of them to think that all could be solved with Hague and Vogelbach. Or maybe arrogance. Arrogance or ignorance.

I guess Shelton gave up trying to match up his bullpen and just went with the "put whoever in there" strategy... throwing Santana randomly into the game in the 7th against a pile of lefties. He is the perfect clown to stand at the center of this P.T. Barnum production.

Hank is easily the most broken hitter out of the many broken hitters we have. Sad. Wth is Hague doing?

Expand full comment
Chris Chapman's avatar

Just read a Fangraphs article about how Edgar Martinez and Kevin Seitzer have turned around the Mariners’ offense. Was hoping Hague might have a positive impact on the Pirates but thus far there is no evidence that he can do that.

Expand full comment
MB 21's avatar

Those two guys were MLB hitters and Edgar was the man. No offense to Hague (hmmm - pun in there somewhere) but he just doesn't have the track record here. Could it be that the problem is above the hitting coach?

Phil's avatar

Edgar is in HOF. Matt Hague’s mom wouldn’t even vote for him for HOF.

Chris Chapman's avatar

True, but not every great coach was necessarily great at the thing they coached. Sometimes great hitters aren’t able to teach what they intuitively know, but point well taken.
