Watched replay of game......geez another Classic at Wrigley. Couple takeaways:

1. Falter was gassed, Shelton pulled him not one batter too soon. Outstanding performance!

2. Why didn't we put Morel on, first base was empty and his run is meaningless? He's one of their best hitters, that was an IW every time. Taughman has been horrible and he was on deck.

3. Michael A.'s throw home was offline, a more accurate throw and Bart doesn't have to do gymnastics moves trying to tag Bellinger.

4. This is 2nd game we have lost due to catcher getting the ball knocked out by runner.

5. Great hustle by Olivares backing up Nicky G. losing pop-up in sun, and getting Wisdom trying to stretch into a double.

6. Great hustle by B Rey to beat out a single to SS.

7. Overall just a fantastic ballgame, love scoreless duels.

The game was lost due to a lack of offense. You should win a large number of the games where you hold the other team to one run.

It bears repeating: Haines fired when?

Here is an explanation on the play at home.

She does a good job but is missing a key part of the tag out rule. A tag out can be with the ball in glove or the ball in hand an empty glove can't apply a tag nor can an empty hand with the ball in the other. When the tag was made the ball was part of the glove, if the ball was dislodged from the glove the leagues argument would be correct. The ball was dislodged from the hand only, not the glove which made the tag. The catcher removed the ball under control with the hand, several frames of video evidence shows the ball being held under control before it is dislodged in the hand. The ball was not dislodged from the glove in which the tag was made. Bart did not juggle or bobble the ball (which is in the rule book) and held possession in his hand (not glove) until dislodged by the runner.

The runner should be out or they are contradicting the tag out rule, the ball can only be dislodged from the glove (which applied the tag) not the hand.

Well the ball being knocked out of his glove or hand is not reviewable whether intentional or not. A better throw or Bart doesn't lose the ball he was out. Neither thing happened!

Expand full comment

Not my point, a tag can only be applied with the ball in glove or the ball in hand. You can't tag someone with your hand while the ball is in the glove and vice versa. The tag was applied with the ball in glove it was then controlled in the hand until dislodged by the runner. If the ball was dislodged from the glove or the catcher bobbled or juggled the ball in their hand on removing from the glove, the leagues argument would be valid. With the tag being made with the ball in glove and then being dislodged from the hand contradicts the ruling from the rule book.

Well she does say the mlb rules don't make sense when you get down to it.

I thought she did a great job, but it is an area she missed. It isn't very clear but it is a contradiction with the tag rule. The ball was never dislodged from the item making the tag and there was clear control in the hand before being dislodged. The tag was completed once Bart had control of the ball in his hand.

I'm watching the replay of the game and something occurred to me. Bart is not an everyday catcher, he needs a day off after catching to hit. I looked at his game logs to check my assumption. He hasn't had a hit the day after catching but he has gotten on base every game but one (one was a hit by pitch) after a rest day. His only 2 games he didn't get a hit after a rest day was after the stretch of several games started at the end of April. After those 2 he's hitting again.

Mixed report from Altoona. Harrington started and threw four perfect innings, five Ks. Then Solometo gave up four.

Expand full comment

What is going on with Solometo? Zero strikeouts as well! Has Barco become our top LH pitching prospect?

Expand full comment

Barco was always the top LH pitching prospect…

Expand full comment

What I've seen was poor command. He was having trouble throwing strikes in March.

I just tuned in to the Indians game and Heller is pitching, he has a pitch categorized as a slutter, not only is up on the screen but the announcers are calling it that…..🙀

Expand full comment

Super into calling a pitch a slutter on national tv

Davis with a HR, walk and a hit by pitch.

Bae is 3 for 4 with a HR.

Expand full comment

Davis finished with two dingerz. Gorski was a single shy of a cycle. Damn, beat out a bunt or something.

Expand full comment

I was excited for a moment as well, until

I saw both Davis HR’s were of a position player

An important distinction! TY.

Bae’s hitting .356 with .995 OPS but unfortunately he’s been playing CF and LF in Indy and those are positions that are already filled in Pittsburgh so there’s no room for him on the active roster. Can’t imagine who they would replace. Can you? 🤔

Expand full comment

I heard Ben Gamel is available. 🤞

Expand full comment

Gee, I dunno. A 53 OPS+ . . . can't find that just anywhere.

Axiel Plaz had one HR last year, none this year in the FCL, but just hit his second in five ABs for Bradenton.

The legend begins . . . .

Expand full comment

The ball just explodes off his bat. It's crazy

Expand full comment

I was obviously prematurely excited by his play when he was 16 and crushing the ball, but I am really glad to see him at Bradenton and off to a good start.

Expand full comment

I'm hoping he does well enough to stay there. No idea how long Forrester is out, but once he's back they could promote him or Alfonzo. The Ross thing with Greensboro is weird.

Well it was only 454ft at 112.5mph, he can do better.

In case this hasn't been noted -- Fleming cleared waivers and was outrighted.

I missed the game today but saw the play at the plate to end it. Pirates need to file a protest with 3 pictures: 1st one a frame of the tag, which beat the touching of home plate: 2nd a frame of the ball in Barts hand after the tag (actually as many frames as possible here): 3rd Bellinger's hand knocking the ball out of Bart's hand. They also need to send said pictures to every media outlet.

They should also send every missed ball and strike call for Skenes and Hendricks from yesterday's game. Skenes had a negative 5 calls against while Hendricks had a positive 8 calls go his way. That potentially cost an even more historic performance from Skenes. At least 15+ pitches, most likely in the mid twenties.

What do the Pirates do with Bednar? He is so hittable these days.

Expand full comment

What the hell happened? I go to get a new propane tank and Bednar blows it on a dubious call by the ump? What happened?

Expand full comment

Morel gets a hit to CF after a double by Bellinger. Taylor makes a strong throw just up 1B line. Bart catches ball puts his hand on ball and dives to tag Bellinger. Replay shows he tags him out, but in the process Bart pulls ball out of glove and Bellinger knocks it out of his hand. Ump begins to call him out, but changes call to safe after he sees ball on ground. Replay confirms call and MLB releases statement afterwards saying he beat tag and Bart didn’t complete the process of the tag.

It was a homer call for sure.

The NBA and NFL are good about acknowledging mistakes by their officials, the MLB never does. Very frustrating. I love the sport, but boy do I hate the way it’s run.

Expand full comment

Tough call to make in real time, which is why replay was instituted. This call is right up there with the time Cervelli was called for blocking the plate on a force out when the stupid blocking the plate rule was first instituted.

Expand full comment

Pirates got robbed. They need to file a protest with MLB.

MLB saying he wasn’t tagged and tag wasn’t completed is wrong on both counts.

Expand full comment

As the studio crew is pointing out, why address completing the tag if bellinger wasn’t tagged in time anyway? Just bogus umpiring—they knew the result they wanted and exposed themselves with their convoluted explanation.

Expand full comment

Clearly MLB Officials didn’t want Umps being subjected to hostile crowd.

It was a tough call to make in real time, but not in replay. Very much a cut and dry call.

This is on par with the Meals game.

Lost in all of this, Bailey Fucking Falter folks.

I’m all in on Falter now :).

Agree with several of you who who believe he was out. However I have a solution to all of this: David Bednar, be better.

The umps won that for the Cubs.... no doubt at all. Awful calls against Falter and for Imanaga.

The final play probably was safe, but I hope the Bucs hammer home how bad the home plate ump was today and make a formal complaint to MLB.
