As I wrote here when they signed Chapman, I found him excruciating to watch last year but he generally got the job done after a ton of harrowing moments. This year he’s failing too many times to wriggle out of all the walks and three-ball counts. He is who he is at this point: unhittable when he’s on, but his on moments are getting rare. In this context losing Borucki really hurts.

Another bad pen night.

A positive for the game was Bart, hit the ball hard a couple times and had the swinging bunt single. Great play by Chapman to keep him from a third hit.

Hopefully he can keep it going tomorrow.

Yeah... it is starting to look like they may have lucked into something with him.

He's only struggled when he's played on back to back days. With the pirates, sss lol.

It's time for Chapman to revamp his delivery. Scrap the pause and balance and go with normal slide step. Do we have any coaches and manager to tell him? Probably not.

A ton of strikeouts by the boys tonight and only one key hit. Walked way too many and defense was not great. Adds up to a loss on most nights.

Well we stole the game yesterday and blew this one out of the water so I guess it is a wash, but man, this bullpen is trash! The beginnings of a really good team can be seen but can Cherington get us there??!

As much as I'd hate to bring him up, Ashcraft might be their best option to bring up.

I thought I saw Borucki in the pen with Bednar......maybe he's on the taxi squad and will be activated tomorrow.

If they really wanted to take a step, this is definitely the move

Sure sending Ryan down for Bae was a stupid roster decision, but there’s also no bullpen depth worth calling up from AAA. Which is also stupid.

I dont hate having ryan around, his walks are the main thing but that 2 seamer plays in my opinion

MWT's avatar

Ryan is the best option. I’m pretty sure he has to remain down for a certain amount of days before he can be recalled though?

Yep unless an injury replacement.

His FB plays and is effective. Otherwise the Giant hitters had some good swings at the slider.....but his FB is his out pitch.

So why do they have 14 hitters and 12 pitchers? What terrible roster management and managing today. This just feels like a terribly managed game but it starts with roster construction.

Aurorus Borealus's avatar

Yes. They are short in the bullpen, and it has affected them 2 games in a row now: all to protect a garbage-bin free-agent acquisition from being DFAed and the GM from embarassment. What is more, they lost pitching depth and were very lucky not to lose more DFAing Fleming and Contreras to bring up a guy who was getting pounded in AAA.

Just bad, stupid roster management all the way around. They are not a serious team, and until they get serious, we are going to suffer through more of this, as they waste years of control on Cruz, Jones, and Skenes. Just awful.

Well they have Tellez to cheer them on and be their buddy.

Well, if somehow the Bucs tie this and Nicolas can go a couple clean innings, we've always got Tellez.

Anyone else have that sinking feeling that carrying 13 position players and 12 pitchers isn't a good idea right now?

Green Weenie's avatar

Yes. BC strikes again. What a dumbass.

TNBucs's avatar

Yeah, I can’t believe that if they knew Bednar wasn’t available and given that Ortiz pitched multiple innings last night, Ben wouldn’t have called up a pitcher.

Expand full comment
Aurorus Borealus's avatar

They DFAed everyone or optioned them, so they can't call up Fleming for 4 or 5 more days nor Rider for 8 or 9.

Another big fat F grade in Baseball GMing 101.
