Once another catcher is healthy, can we ditch Grandal and keep Delay?

Expand full comment

Totally agree but think I saw the other day the Pirates are 16-7 when Grandal starts. Probably has more to do with him catching Skenes and Keller more often than not but I could see the Pirates pushing that narrative for veteran presence. I would probably send Taylor out the door behind him as I don’t see the point of having him in the lineup

Expand full comment

If Grandal wasn't so bad they might be 21 - 2 when he started, lol.

Bart is the easy decision when he gets healthy. Any idea how his healing/rehab is going? Davis will be the hard decision when he is healthy. Short term, yeah dump Grandal. Long term , would it benefit him and the organization more to send him to Indy when he is ready to go? That makes it a harder decision. Hopefully Joey is back sooner than later.

I have to give credit to Bruihl and Nikolas giving the Buc's three innings while giving up only two runs especially Bruihl after Saturdays outing. Of course the Rockies may have just been worn out after Saturday, lol.

I'm mean I guess but I _love_ the Dodgers losing Betts and Yamamoto in the same week.

Tennessee v North Carolina coming on espn2 now.

Expand full comment

How much of a boost do you think Honeycutt gets with his postseason

Expand full comment

Exactly what Nola said, he has had the clutch gene working some magic. He just has so much swing and miss.

Expand full comment

He's an athlete, but those swing and miss issues will really get exposed in pro ball.

Expand full comment

Yep, he has holes in the zone that it would take a good hitting coach to fix. I've seen him swing through a couple of cherry hanging curves, his timing looked fine but still missed the pitches by a lot.

Expand full comment

I’m sort of hoping Brecht/Vance gets to their second pick.

Expand full comment

I'd be happy with either of those 2, they have the highest ceilings. Either could turn into a star.

Expand full comment

Yes, but if he’s done it against better pitching in the WS, that might enhance his status. I’m not saying it should, but it might. Hopefully for his sake, he ends up in an org who can develop bats. So not Pgh.

Expand full comment

All of his other tools are tip top, if he can hit .250 he's a superstar. I think the highest he goes is around 15+/- lowest he goes is mid thirties. Most likely between 18 and 23. If he somehow made it to 37, I'd take the chance on him.

Expand full comment

CBSsports.com had a mock last week and Honeycutt wasn't in the first round. They stopped at Texas at 30 which interestingly was Tommy Tanks to the Rangers. Another interesting pick was Tibbs all the way up to the Angels at 8 in a below slot move. Montgomery to the Pirates.

Expand full comment

He's a guy I wouldn't be upset if they took him at 1-9, but if he somehow made it to 37, I'd be ecstatic.

But knowing the Pirates, they'd take a Mitch Jebb second. Stupid 42 pick, and Sammy Stafura goes 43

Griff O'Fuck here we come lol

Expand full comment

Hard to say. Cause he's still done the same Vance Honeycutt things. Run down fly balls, whiff, and hit dingers

Expand full comment

Mookie Betts broke his wrist on hbp today. Hate to hear that.

Expand full comment

I hate it for Mookie and love it for the Los Angeles Dollars.

Expand full comment

Me too, he's an exciting player to watch.

Expand full comment

Yeah he's a player that makes games exciting.

Expand full comment

That stinks, but hopefully he'll be fully healed by the postseason.

One of my favorite non-Pirates

Expand full comment

Supposedly he will not need surgery.

Expand full comment

Harrington having to once again deal with dookie doo doo defense in Altoona.

Expand full comment

They try to make up for it by not hitting.

Can't believe we get Monday baseball. It's been a while, since May 13th

Expand full comment

Except that here 4+ hours and 2 states from Cincinnati, MLB has us blacked out for Reds games :(

Expand full comment

North Carolina also blocked on Reds games

Expand full comment

Maybe western NC but not Chapel Hill

Expand full comment

Good to know, but as you have figured out I am indeed in Western NC.

Expand full comment

Your comment scared me so I had to check again. It’s bad enough they block Nats and Baltimore games like I can realistically make the 4+ hour trek to see a weekday game. Completely ridiculous how MLB draws the blackout lines.

Expand full comment

New Orleans for the win!

Expand full comment

Seems logical, to MLB and MLB only.

That sucks

Expand full comment

A Skenes day as well. Great day for baseball!

Booyah!! #34 down and 91 to go!!! Series won!! Raise it!!!!! Happy Father’s Day again y’all!!!

Man come on, Oneil Cruz is a dumb ballplayer, right?

Expand full comment

what are you? bot? troll? mental patient?

Expand full comment

Just a guy who'd like to see some sound baseball played by his team instead of SheltonSlop (tm)

Expand full comment

Why? The popup?

Expand full comment

Yes! Peguero, Alika, Nick all get that

Expand full comment

Nick gets that? Nick literally did not get that, when he's the one that should have.

Expand full comment

Cruz called him off!

Expand full comment

Even Wehner said, "Doesn't look like anyone was calling for it". Nick ran in the opposite direction of where the ball fell, but hey, Cruz is the dumb one. It didn't look like any called for it. They all just looked at each other.

Expand full comment

Hey, I could be mistaken. I thought I saw Cruz call for it. He looked by far the closest to the ball to me, too. (and I meant Nick gets to that if he's at SS not at 2B...it landed to the left and back of 2B iirc)

Ross with another HR today. Also two singles, so he was clearly mailing it in.

Below the Mendoza line and an OPS over .900. Don’t see that every day.

Expand full comment

Slacker!

Expand full comment

Gotta respect the Rockies for never changing their uniform in the history of the franchise

Expand full comment

We should be giving Taylor s at bats to palacios

Expand full comment

I hate to disagree with you again so soon but why? Palacios has a 84 wRC+ going at AAA. We should instead try and trade for Luis Robert Jr or JJ Bleday or something.

Expand full comment

Gorski has a 117 wRC+ with an OPS of .893 along with 13 home runs and 43 RBI in Indy. He’s also a right handed hitter and by all accounts is excellent defensively. He’s the guy who should be given a chance, but Taylor’s making $4 million.

Expand full comment

They want to wait until Gorski is 30 to give him a chance.

Expand full comment

Yes but those trades won’t happen until a month and a half from now

Expand full comment

In truth, they won't happen at all because Cherington is a coward.

Expand full comment

Stallings and Diaz migrate to Colorado and morph into great hitters. Maybe another Pirate catcher should take note.

Expand full comment

Davis would become an MVP candidate in Colorado. They might have a crappy analytics department but they have really good coaching.

Expand full comment

Agree. They do a lot of dumb stuff, but the coaching and scouting claws some of it back. They are one of the few teams to have ripped off the Rays.

Expand full comment

Id do it for Kris Bryant if they’d take on his salary

Expand full comment

Bryant is well on his way to becoming an arthritic cripple. Worst $182 mil Rox have ever spent.

Expand full comment

The last time Kris Bryant was an above average hitter was 2022!

Expand full comment

One thing about tank this year:

Everyone said he would embarrass himself with the glove but I didn’t see that once

Expand full comment

Yeah I thought he was totally forgettable on defense which is what you want from a catcher. I think he's going to hit too. Just unlucky to get drafted by a dipshit organization, imo. I hope Hank becomes great friends with Nick Gonzales and spends a month at his hitting barn this offseason because the Pirates coaching staff ain't going to help any of these guys.

He’s surely got a Mattmorris Chris archer Hail Mary in him

Hats off to Fleming and Mlod for an unbelievable six innings of shut out ball at Coors Field against a team that plated sixteen runs yesterday. Now for a exciting ride for the last three innings, lol.

Expand full comment

Did not expect this to go well with no Ortiz.

Expand full comment

I don't think they will ever get another 4 innings out of Fleming like they did today but it sure came at a good time if they hang on for a win.

Expand full comment

Mlodzinski 6 outs on 18 pitches.

Expand full comment

Last 7 games, mlod has an era of 1.04… let this be the mlod from now on!

Expand full comment

Should let him go three innings next opener apearance

Expand full comment

After missing most of spring training and trying to find his groove in triple A, he was not ready to be brought up when he was. It was out of necessity after losing Moreta, Borucki, then having Holderman and Bednar miss time as well.

I really really hope youre right! That would be such a boost for us
