If only Nutting would use just money to acquire the guys needed to be a winning team. If Cherington would take on some of a few bad contracts from the White Sox he could do:
Crochet
Robert
Benintendi
Moncada
$40M cash
for
Ortiz
Endy
Bubba
Solometo
solves our OF problem, our Skenes Jones innings limit problem with 6 man rotation here on out, gives us maybe the best rotation in baseball next year, solves our ke'bryan hayes problem if Moncada is ever healthy this year.
I'm not in EST so not quite that late. It's better than going to bed crying because he's not sure what to do and can't handle the stress a la Cherington.
Has any team f'd up a 1-1 so badly as Cherington with Henry Davis? His rehab just got paused at AA after 5 k's in 6 ABs. Poor kid just had the bad luck to get drafted by fools.
McAdoo hit another HR today. He has three in his first six AA games, which is especially impressive given that the Curve home park is not exactly a homer haven.
This game was actually on PSN. I didn't see the HR, it must've been in the later innings. He did not look good his first couple of ABs... Good morning, good afternoon & goodnight vs a lefty for his 1st AB. Took a called strike three on the inside that he flinched on. He's a monster of a human, but he doesn't appear to be fluid or smooth. Misplayed a ball in RF badly. Doesn't appear to have a great feel but takes advantage of mistakes vs arms that will never make the Show.
What type of pitches was Webb making him look bad on? I remember Webb at Georgia having really good breaking pitches but average at best fastball. Also had control issues. Just curious because maybe McAdoo adjusted in the 3rd at bat against him when he hit the homerun or just crushed a mistake.
fb and cb. Webb isn't really a prospect. Fangraphs has him as a *other prospect of note*
"Webb, 24, had a good 2023 season as a starter at High-A and pitched in Cleveland’s Prospect Breakout game, where he sat 91-94 and flashed an average braking ball and changeup. His arm swing is kind of long, but he otherwise has a depth starter look"
Webb mowing down the curve with 11k's in 6 innings is probably more of an indictment of how bad Altoona is.
I agree on Webb and his totals are more Altoona's inability to hit. I didn't watch the at bats or could tell from GameDay what type of pitches were thrown. The only video I saw was the homerun on a first pitch. Just hoping it was more of an adjustment by McAdoo but it's still a good sign to capitalize on a mistake.
I wanted Crews, would not have cussed had the Pirates drafted Langford. All things being equal, I would always choose the position player over the pitcher. After I saw Skenes pitch as a pro, I realized everything wasn't equal. Skenes appeared to be that good. If I had to choose between Skenes and Strasburg, I'd take Skenes. I just hope he stays healthy.
Skenes by far then and now. He (edit "He" is Langford) was my second favorite last year though, he looks like he's figuring it out and is going to be a good one though.
If the Jays actually were considering or desiring to shop him, a major hand injury would be incredibly bad timing for them. Kind of a far less bad (and less permanent) version of when the Bucs held out a few weeks too long shopping offers on he who shall not be named.
But, notwithstanding anything to do with his trade market, hope he is OK! 🤞
Those of you, or us, hoping the Pirates might make a significant trade to improve this offense any time soon hear the GMs interview earlier today?
Cherington stressed the importance of internal improvement from a group that entered Sunday’s game tied for 25th in MLB in runs scored. “We have more players that can improve by far than the number we can acquire,” Cherington said. Honestly no one can argue with a statement like that. There’s only one way to go for a lot of these guys. Sit back and relax. Watch and hope. Hey Rowdy’s doing it, kind of anyway. Regardless, it’s all you’re gonna get.
There has to be "internal improvement," however unlikely. They cannot remake the entire roster outside of Reynolds, Cruz, and Gonzalez mid-season. Cherington had $30 million and a better stable of prospects to deal (at least according to the prospect gurus) in the off-season, and he failed to add even one replacement-level bat to the lineup. Hoping that he can overhaul the roster midseason with 1 top 100 prospect and little budget room is delusional. They might be able to fill one hole or get one bat, but they need more than that. Most of the improvement will have to come from the guys they have. Besides, I don't trust Cherington to go bat-hunting with their small prospect pool. If he couldn't find a single decent bat in the off-season, I'm not sure why anyone expects him to be able to find one now.
I'm happy if they don't make any splash moves this July, unless the situation changes dramatically one way or another. Teams under .500 with negative run differentials should not be going all-in anyway in July.
What he should be looking for now is a change of scenery bat or 2. Someone that would cost our own change of scenery guy or lower value prospects.
An example Alex Thomas from the DBacks, he's blocked at the major league level and the DBacks have CF depth (Barrosa would be an option aa well). Another would be Kirilloff from the Twins. Both these guys might be better served with some time in the minors before a call-up.
The question is what would be the realistic return they would want.
I'll give you a good "change-of-scenery" even up trade: Suwinski to KC for MJ Melendez. The Pirates can move Melendez back to C where he belongs, and KC may be able to turn Suwinski around.
He’s not wrong. I would guess Cruz is primed to go on a nice run to join Rowdy. Jack is probably a lost cause at this point and needs to be replaced with Bae.
I think what cherington is saying- if the guys we have internally don’t get it going, it’ll be moot at the deadline.
If they try to add now, it’ll be a severe overpay as 80% of the league is in some form of contention for one of the 3 WC’s. It’s a sellers market and they have zero leverage.
I don’t know why some people looked at his comments as if he was dismissing the possibility of acquiring players closer to the deadline. He stated the obvious, yes the current team needs to hit better for them to stay in the playoff race. For most of them, there’s nowhere to go but up.
If I recall correctly, a few days ago Olivares threw behind the runner and Albies took second base on the throw. Shelton said he would address it post game. Olivares does the same exact thing today. Luckily Murphy doesn’t run well…

It's really this easy...If only the Front Office would stay up until 1AM making deals like BJ, the savant.

I hate to temper enthusiasm...

Nice to hear a counter vs all the glowing reports.
Langford just hit for the cycle tonight.
Still want Skenes. You?

Crews and Langford are from Planet Earth, Skenes is not.

Agreed. I like Crews, too.
Crews was my favorite early in the year but the more I watched Skenes he more than leaped him. Crews was a close third with Langford as a second.
Anybody else getting cautiously hopeful about Nicolas?
It would make for quite a comeback story from the 6 bases loaded walkathon, one of the most difficult innings of any pitcher's career.
he is a rookie for what its worth
Booyah !!!! 40 in the books!!! Nice game by Bailey and 2 Bombz ( we are sponsored by Sheetz now so…). By Oneil and Rowdy.
Yikes. Vlad just too 97 off the hand from Cole. Hopefully he’s ok
Wow, yeah, that’s never good.

I’m forever convinced MLB was tipped off about the pedophile long before he was arrested.
Who is the pedophile?
Felipe Vasquez Rivero
Too bad the last 6 hitters went down in order and we couldn't get BRey to the plate. 25 was a nice run though including last two 9th inning hits.
Nice recovery win today and bounce back performance for Falter. Cards and Mets immediately ahead at home...hopefully time to make up some ground.
Good time to get the bats going.
The Mets are smoking hot right now.
Muck the Fets. Except when they play the Crads.
Due for regression, no?
🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️🏴☠️
Pleasantly surprised that the last guy swung 3-1. 🙂
Nothing scares and/or annoys me like relievers that can’t find the zone.
Raise it, I’ll take it! 😁
Nice win. Got a split for the road trip and finished over .500 for the month.
How? We suck so bad!,!,!,!
What a big catch by Taylor in the 9th.
It sure was👏

That's a good one, I'm sure there's a bunch out there. I actually think that's how they should approach Jesus Sanchez but use Bae or Peguero.
Gamblers fallacy. He thinks the second he walks away from the table it’s going to “hit big.”
He’s not wrong. I would guess Cruz is primed to go on a nice run to join Rowdy. Jack is probably a lost cause at this point and needs to be replaced with Bae.

Rowdy for the month of June: batting average .348, SLG .576, .970 OPS. In 66 at bats, had six doubles and three home runs. Also 14 RBIs.

Derek bought Olivares Dairy Queen and they talked about it a little bit.
Skenes being interviewed while Bucs score 4 runs can’t be a coincidence.
