Keith Law scouted the Greensboro-Aberdeen series this past weekend. Here is a summary of his Pirate-related observations:
1) Overall he is positive on Griffin: “Griffin’s performance has been incredible for a teenager from Mississippi whose biggest question as an amateur was whether he could hit at all.” He praises his play at shortstop: quicker than expected with a great arm. Remaining concern is that he “still bars his lead arm,” leading him to worry about his adjusting to better pitchers who can change speeds. For now it works because he starts his hands quickly and rips his bat through the zone (as we have all seen on video).
2) Rivas has impressive power, but he has a 44% chase rate, leading to low OBPs. He projects him as a utility infielder.
3) Carlson Reed had a lousy game on Sunday and appears not to be fully recovered from his back injury.
4) Law has always liked Keiner Delgado and still does —- another utility infielder, good on-base percentages but no power. The opposite of Rivas.
5) Finally, he has an actual shout-out for Lonnie White, Jr. Said it’s the first time he’s seen him healthy since he was drafted. Sees him as making it to AAA and perhaps getting some major league time.
Though, idk if Ben feels the same way about Yorke as Law did. I was excited about Yorke heading into this year, but ranking him that far ahead of Griffin was a choice.
Would you say Canario not having options is probably keeping both Cook and Jack in the minors for now? And Triolo is in the majors because none of our shortstop/third basemen in the minors have really proven anything down there?
Options or not, it makes little sense to have a young player on the active roster but not give him regular playing time. The only justifications are if Hague and Vogelbach are working with him (but we're talking about the hitting coaches of the worst hitting team in MLB) or if they're showcasing Pham and then will start playing Canario once Pham is traded. But I'd take a chance on designating him hoping he passes through but being happy for him if another team claims him and gives him playing time.
It’s not Canario having no options, it’s Cherington having no brain. And Triolo has proven he can’t hit ML pitching, but Cherington seems to think offense is irrelevant.
I think they've had him out working on approach stuff since June 26th or whatever and tonight was the first try back. Pham's going to get traded and he's going to get those PAs, right?

Most of the value in the return there comes from Rainer. He just went out for the year with a significant shoulder injury. Way too big a risk.
Ah I didn't realize Rainer was injured, thanks
Even the Nutting bots at Bucsdugout are calling for Cherington to be fired. Why wait? We could crowd source the draft as well or better. Also guessing Tyler Glasnow will be crying at a MLB park within 3 games of returning to LAD's active roster: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2025/07/dodgers-to-activate-tyler-glasnow-on-wednesday.html

I read #4 and went, "Wait, are Keith Law and Ben the same person?"
The proof would be if Delgado reached AAA and then Law said he should never be called up.
Gonna have to put feelers out there if anyone has seen Law and BC have ever been in the same room
Though, idk if Ben feels the same way about Yorke as Law did. I was excited about Yorke heading into this year, but ranking him that far ahead of Griffin was a choice.
Cherington would draft Kevin Newman every year if he could
I like reading #5 the best.
I kind of understand getting your closer work the day before an off day. I'm not sure I understand it when you have games the following two days.
This is unnecessary to bring Bednar in for one batter. Spring training is over.
Do Canario and Triolo both have options where they can be sent to the minors?
No and yes.

Cherington seems to obsess about the guys filling the last spots on the roster while doing nothing about the top of the roster.
Royals had 16 HRs in 44 games at Kaufmann coming into tonight.
And then they hit four in one game.
Days without evening minor league games to watch are the worst baseball days.
Manfred Mondays
It's just another Manfred Monday.
What’s wrong with this one?
Everything
Except for one swing by Pham, this is the same pitiful joke of an offense they had in Seattle.
When you're on a drought, you count any scoring. These are just the basic rules of bedding an ugly chick from the bar.
Yep, very very close to 36 scoreless innings in a row.
Canario is NOT seeing the baseball well. Understatement.
Im all for giving someone like Canario a shot, but you gotta know when to cut bait and we are well past that point

Witt with 104, 108, 112 EV's tonite. Perez with a 110.
KC and the Cheringtons are now tied for last in R/G. Ben can’t be beat!!
It’s unbelievable that Nutting is letting Cherington do the trade deadline.
We suck again.
Does Bob actually watch his team?
Apparently through rose colored glasses.
My dude. Those bitches are transitions. But maybe the richest and shittiest owners can find them in a rose hue.
Yeah Bob got his on the home shopping network.
KC came in just two ahead of the Cheringtons for last in HRs.
