Overview

Coming out of college, both Baseball America and FanGraphs characterized the 6’6” Brethowr as a power-hitting outfielder. A year later, BA described him as a contact-oriented hitter whose approach isn’t conducive to producing a lot of power. In college, he had a .978 OPS and 11 home runs as a sophomore, and a .968 OPS with 15 home runs as a junior. As a pro, he hasn’t hit well in any respect and has had significant trouble making contact, but he does walk a lot. Brethowr is strictly a corner outfielder, but he appears to run well. The Pirates acquired him for Taylor Rogers.

2024-25

After signing, Brethowr went to low A and, in 23 games, hit 169/274/253. He had only three extra base hits in 83 ABs. He moved up to low A in 2025 and, through the trade deadline, hit 221/398/312. He had a very high walk rate of 16.6% but also struck out at a 26.7% rate. So far, Brethowr has played mainly in right. He appears to run well, stealing 25 bases in 27 tries. The Pirates acquired him at the trade deadline.
