Overview

Custodio originally signed with Colorado on July 2, 2018, for $150,000, but the contract was voided when he failed his physical due to a bad bone bruise.  The Pirates signed him during spring training in 2019.  He runs well and has split his time between center and right. He has some power. Custodio’s career hasn’t gotten very far, partly due to repeated injuries and partly due to the Pirates not pushing him aggressively.

2019-21

Custodio played center the bulk of the time in his DSL debut in 2019, but saw some time in the corners.  He had eight outfield assists, so he seems to throw well.  At the plate, he hit for a high average with some power, batting 324/358/448.  He didn’t walk much, but seldom struck out.  He also stole 15 bases in 19 tries. After the pandemic season, though, got hurt in 2021. Instead of the FCL, the Pirates sent Custodio back to the DSL, where he got only 56 ABs. He hit very well in that time.

2022-23

Custodio was hurt again when the FCL started play in 2022.  He finally was activated at the end of June and got into 21 FCL games before moving up for a few games at Bradenton.  He dominated the rookie league pitching, with good power and a very low K rate.  He played exclusively in the outfield corners.

In 2023, Custodio started the season at Bradenton. He didn’t get much of a chance, though. He played in 16 games and put up a .658 OPS, then got hurt. When he returned, the Pirates sent him back to the FCL. He only played in 25 games there, with a .788 OPS.
