Overview
The Pirates signed Toledo as a good defender who should be able to stay at short. Like a lot of the infielders they sign, he’s a patient hitter and will draw walks, but he needs to get stronger and hit with more authority. His speed is about average.
2020-22
In his debut after the 2020 season got canceled, Toledo mostly played short, but spent a little time at second and third. At the plate, he got on base a lot thanks to a very high walk rate of 18.2%. In 2022, in the FCL, he continued to draw walks but otherwise his hitting slipped quite a bit.
2023-24
Toledo went back to the FCL and got hot a few weeks into the season, including increased power. He finished the season hitting 306/413/479 and still had just one fewer walks than strikeouts. He played second almost exclusively and had just one error.
The Pirates moved Toledo up to Bradenton in 2024. He was the team’s most frequently used second baseman and saw a little time at third. He struggled to hit, batting 224/318/302. He drew walks at a good rate, but struck out in a fifth of his plate appearances despite not hitting for much power. Toledo had only one error in 47 games at second. In mid-August, the Pirates reassigned Toledo to the FCL in order to make room at Bradenton for some of the team’s 2024 draft picks. The FCL had finished its season by then, so that effectively ended Toledo’s.
