Overview
The Brewers signed Severino to a seven-figure bonus as a switch-hitting infielder with power potential. He’s since dropped the switch-hitting and bats right-handed. It’s open to question whether he’ll stay at short, but he has a strong arm and could play third. His speed is average.
2022-23
Severino played the 2022 season at age 17 in the DSL. The Brewers used him mostly at short, but he played a little at third. He hit reasonably well, but his walk and K rates weren’t good. In the FCL in 2023, he got off to a good start, hitting for a lot of power, but he went out for an injury after a dozen games. At the end of July, the Pirates acquired Severino for Carlos Santana. After the trade, Severino got into three games, all at third. He went 3-for-10 with a home run and just one strikeout. Then he went on the injured list for the rest of the season due to hamate surgery.
2024
Severino put in a full season in 2024 and had a breakout year. He played in the FCL until their season ended, then moved to Bradenton. His power started to come around, as he tied for the FCL lead in home runs with ten. He batted 291/373/545 there, with a good BB:K ratio of 26:35. FSL pitching was more of a challenge and Severino had a lot more trouble with swings and misses, striking out two more times than in the FCL in a little over half the plate appearances. His walk rate also dropped sharply. The power was unaffected, though, as he hit six home runs and batted 237/285/500. In the FCL, Severino split his time evenly between short and third. At Bradenton he spent about two-thirds of his time at third, which is where he looks more comfortable. Between the two levels, Severino stole 16 bases in 20 tries.
