Overview
The Pirates signed Ramos out of Mexico. He was their first signing from that country after MLB lifted its ban due to questionable financial practices in player signings from Mexico. His fastball sits a little over 90 mph, and he relies a lot on a slider and a cutter.
2019-22
In 2019, Ramos pitched as a starter in the DSL and did well without dominating, putting up a 3.04 ERA and 1.33 WHIP.
After missing the pandemic season, Ramos went to the FCL and, despite a 2.25 ERA, pitched just decently. He had some control trouble, walking five per nine innings. The Pirates sent Ramos back to the FCL in 2022 and he pitched only sporadically, appearing in ten games. When he did pitch, he had little trouble getting hitters out. Right-handed hitters had just a .346 OPS against him.
2023
Ramos went back to the FCL for a third time to start the season and again pitched very well. In eight games, he had an 0.71 WHIP and 10.3 K/9. The Pirates finally promoted him to Bradenton, but his stuff didn’t stand up as well to the level. He had a 1.64 WHIP and a 5.7 BB/9. Near the end of the season, he moved up again, making two appearances for Greensboro.
